I bought this unit in November this year. There are two models, the original sound dock which I think is about £199 and the second generation one (the one I bought) which was £279 from John Lewis. The second generation one is basically the same as the first except:
a) it has a rechargeable battery b) it has a swing out dock c) it has an auxiliary (3.5mm) jack input
If you just want a basic model, then go for the first gen one. I got the second gen one because I thought the battery was a useful addition as is the auxiliary 3.5mm input - I have mine connected to an apple airport express that streams itunes from my laptop to my bedroom although I have used it in a friends house with my ipod too.
The sound quality is good for its size which is about the same as a hardback book and it weighs in at about 1 kilo. You can take the battery off as this is the bit that weighs a lot. The controls are easy - you put your ipod on the dock (or connect something else to it) and then there are two touch sensitive controls on the right hand side for volume. It switches off automatically and charges your ipod whilst it is connected.
I don't think that you could compare it to a decent separates system, but for the size of the unit, the sound is incredible. You can turn up the volume quite loud and there is no distortion. There is a sound port on the back which doubles as the handle, and I found that putting against a wall gives a much deeper bass.
The only negative I have to say about the unit is that the power adaptor is massive and could have been designed better. It also comes with a remote control that lets you mimic some of the control features of your ipod - volume, playlist, forward and back etc.
If you want a unit for the kitchen or bedroom or even want to get rid of your bulky stereo, then this is for you. My only gripe is that the dock connector is a little fragile and that you can't control lots of ipod functions from the remote control.
Overall, this is a brilliant piece of technology from a well known audio manufacturer. I love it.
