If you own a pointy guitar or you like a bit of Sepultura then the Boss Metalzone is the distortion pedal for you. Plug it in and turn up your Marshall stack and you'll soon be chugg-a-chugging away with the best of them. This pedal has the typical Boss build quality i.e. you could pound it all day with a seven pound lump hammer and it wouldn't even show a dent and as with all Boss pedals you can power it from either a 9v battery or an external power supply. When an external power supply is plugged in it cut's off the feed from the battery to avoid draining the battery for no reason.
The pedal has a total of six controls. The first is the level control with can provide a massive amount of volume boost when you switch the effect in. you may want to go easy with this one as it can prove to be a little over the top at times. The next four knobs are the EQ section and unusually for a distortion pedal they feature a parametric mid-range control. These knobs are mounted in two sets with a smaller dial placed on top of a larger dial. Although this can be fiddly you won't have to adjust them that often. The first set control the high and low EQ settings and can give anything from a fizzy radio frequency tone to a massive bass heavy growl although the bottom end can get a bit boomy for some applications.
The second set of dials control the mid range frequencies and this is where you can really shape the sound. The inner dial controls the amount of cut and boost and the outer dial determines the frequency this cut or boost is applied too from 200Hz up to 5kHz. This allows you to create sounds from a huge stoner rock sound with a scooped out mid-range up to a heavy Metallica or Sepultura crunch with boosted upper mid-range grit. Without these controls this would be just a normal distortion but this feature allows you to create a huge range of different sounds.
The final control is the distortion amount dial. This control is a little odd as from the bottom to about halfway up it produces sounds from a mild crunching to a full on thrash frenzy but from halfway to the top it just seems to compress the distortion more and more instaed of adding more fuzz. This is not actually a bad thing as it allows you to get that kind of massively compressed digital Nine Inch Nails guitar sound at it's full value without having to use any extra effects. This is another time that you may want to be careful as it may sound blinding through the amp going full out but it could sound dire when you try to record the guitar. If you want to get close to a Pantera or White Zombie guitar sound then this is the setting to go for but use with caution.
Overall this is a very good distortion pedal and even though the effect can be a little over the top for my liking, i would not hestitate to use it on an industrial track at it's more extreme settings.
Advantages: Great look, durable, nice tones Disadvantages: Price
The BOSS Metal Zone MT-2 has become one of the world's most commonly used effects pedals, and is the pedal of choice of most of the metal genre's finest guitarists. It has a three-band equaliser and semi-parametric midtone equaliser to provide an optimum range of tones to suit a variety of subgenres. It seems that BOSS are so confident in their product that they have offered a 5 year warranty with their product. Perhaps this is because it is built ... ...pedals myself i can safely say that the UM100 gives a much crisper yet distorted tone. So unless you are more interested in buying a brand name than a product, i would steer clear of all BOSS products and buy yourself 4 Behringer pedals for the price of one MT-2. ...

Advantages: Huge Sound Disadvantages: Loss of social life
This pedal will convert your small combo into a full on marshall stack. No kidding! There are a range of distortions available from fairly light overdrive type distortions to full-on Metallica-esque distortion. The latter is truely awesome. By setting a scooped setting the sound is second to none. It features treble, bass and 2 midrange tone controls which gives complete control over the sound. For use in metal playing, sustained power chords or ...

...then I couldn't recommend this Boss pedal to you enough!
it hosts a whole range of distortion levels from light to extremely heavy and let's you customize the EQ levels to fine tune the sound you want.
When you buy a Boss pedal you know you're spending your money wisely, because not only are they built out of metal to last a lifetime but the audio quality is exceptional and will never let you down!
I do recommend buying an Ac adaptor for this ... ...long time as long as you don't leave the jack cable plugged into it (as this causes the battery to drain).
CONCLUSION
If you play any form of rock be it punk, metal, grunge or rock n' roll I guarantee you'll get a great sound out of this pedal to fit your exact distortion needs! I can't recommend this pedal enough if your guitar playing style fits into any of the above sub-genres of rock! ...

Advantages: Price, Quality, Sound, Performance, Shape, Beauty. Disadvantages: Not found one yet.
unfortunately I'm not 100% sure what it does! It provides a slight change in tone from mellow to a slightly harsher tone.
Ok the most important thing about electric guitars. The first time I ever picked one up I was devastated to find I didn?t sound like Matt Bellamy or Tom Morrello or Jimi Hendrix or who ever your fave guitarist may be. To produce sounds like these you will need either an amp that produces distortion (I have a Marshall MG15 DFX which I will review at a later date) Effects pedals (I have a bossmetalzonemt-2, will also review later). Or a combination of the two to create rocky sounds. So don't let that put you off if you pick it up and you only get what is referred to as a "clean" sound.
In terms of sound quality the Pacifica is second to none in its price range. It wiped the floor with any feder/squite/gibson les paul ...
Advantages: Price, Quality, features. Line out. Disadvantages: Poor distortion. Some effects not very good.
are Gain and the second volume knob. Turning the gain up will give you a fuzzier rockier sound. The second volume switch will simply quieten/make louder the gain. Unfortunately the gain on this amp is quite poor. It can give you a decent rocky sound although it's really no substitute for a good quality pedal (I would recommend the BossMetalZoneMT-2 maybe will review at later date). Although the gain will entertain you at first you will soon start to wonder why you don?t sound quite like a slipknot guitarist on speed. The pedal will remedy this :D.

Advantages: Fat solos and chunky power chords Disadvantages: Not as versatile as a Strat, rather heavy and 'uncomfortable' body
or Ibanez Tube Screamer positively wails when driven by these pickups. When paired with a BossMT-2MetalZone with the mids 'scooped out;' some really vicious tones reminiscent of a Marshall stack are to be had; even through a Jazz Chorus.
However, it took me some time to find a good balance between 'creamy-smooth' and downright 'muddy' on the tone controls. Every pickup combination is useable, although there are only 3 to choose from : neck, neck+bridge; and bridge alone. I would have liked a coil-tap or 'out-of-phase' option; but never dared to cut into this expensive beauty out of sheer reverence for it.
