Brabantia Fall Front Bread Bin

Brabantia Fall Front Bread Bin

Brabantia Fall Front Bread Bin

Whether you call it a ‘Bread Bin’ or a ‘Bread Box’, it is an important item to have in your kitchen. Bread – in one form or another - is probably the most prevalent food in many countries. Most of us eat it daily and, obviously, fresh bread is when people get their loaves or rolls home from the shop, many often keep it in plastic bags on kitchen shelves or even in the fridge just to keep it soft. However, the BEST way to store bread and make sure that it stays fresh longer.
However, these days we all want items in our kitchen that are not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing – and with this in mind, you won’t go far wrong with a Brabantia.

So what should you look for in a bread bin?

Material

What your bread bin is made of does influence how long your bread stays fresh, tasty and soft – as well as how long the bread bin will last.
You can get bread bins made of wood, plastic, steel, ceramic, glass or a mixture of a couple of these.
1. Wooden boxes have been used for the longest. They are good to look at as well as being made from eco-friendly material.
However, they are difficult to clean, as the wood can take in moisture and smells, they can also harbour bacteria that contributes to your bread going mouldy.
2. Plastic boxes are cheap and simple to use as bread bins; but you must check that it is not the type of plastic that can be used only with non-edible products.
3. Ceramics and glass are also eco-friendly and efficient material, they can also look very good and you can get colours to suit your kitchen; However, they are usually quite heavy and fragile.
4. The longest lasting material for a bread bin is stainless steel. It’s durable and can be cleaned with most detergents, then rinsed, wiped dry and be ready to use. The only drawback is that glossy stainless steel keeps marks of fingerprints, so you might have to clean it more often.
And, when looking for a stainless-steel bread bin, again you can’t go wrong with a Brabantia.

Size and Lid

This really depends on just how many people are there in your household and where the bread bin is going to be placed in your kitchen. Some huge bread boxes even have separate compartments. An average sized bread bin is usually perfect for a family of 2- 4 people, and will generally hold two loaves. If you have more members, may need a bigger one, maybe one with compartments
What you need to remember that that even small bread bins can take up quite a lot of space in the kitchen. This is really where the type of lid you have is important; if you intend to keep your bread bin on a shelf, you need a bread bin with a drop-down or sliding door. If you are storing it on a work surface, but space is limited go for a drop down front so that you can use the top for storing canisters etc.

Features

All bread bins will have different features; most important, make sure that lid seals the box tightly, some will, have magnets on the lid to help this. You can also get a bread bin with a handle that can make it easier to open.
To prevent your bread going mouldy make sure that the bread bin has ventilation holes. If space is a problem, check out if it has the facility to hang it from the wall. Some bread bins that have removable lids have lids that can be used as a bread board and of course, flat topped bread bins can be used for storage.

Price

It’s very important to set yourself a budget, so be realistic from the start, if you only have a set budget in mind, make sure you only look at products in that price range.
However, cheap is not always economical, and while you can expect to pay between £30 - £43 for the Brabantia Fall Front Bread Bin, you can be assured that you are buying a very high-quality product and one that has a 10-year guarantee – so that’s a minimum of £3 - £4 a year.

My Experience

I have had a Brabantia stainless steel bin for years, and it has been such a durable product, that when my old bread bin was looking pat it’s best I opted for the Brabantia Fall Front Bread Bin. Prior to this I had a lot of red appliances in my kitchen, but as I was replacing them I had begun to replace them with stainless steel, so this bread bin fitted in well.
Mine is now 8 months old and it is still as shiny and bright as the day I bought it – I give it a clean, inside and out, every week with Cif Stainless Steel Cleaner and it is still in a lovely condition.
I purchased mine from Argos last year for £37; it is a beautiful and practical bright shiny stainless-steel bread bin with black plastic sides. It has a handy flat top and I store my tea, sugar and coffee canisters on this – presently, I still have my old red ones, but I have the Brabantia stainless steel canisters on my Christmas list!
There is plenty of room for at least two loafs of bread, I make most of my own bread, but usually have a sliced loaf in as well and this and a homemade loaf both fit in and I am also able to store extra buns, crumpets etc on top .This bread bin is a really good size and so much bigger than the average bread bin, it looks and feels like a really good quality item.
Our bread bin is on a flat working surface at the wall, and the door stays level with the base of the bread bin when opened. However, if the bread bin is on the edge of a flat surface the door would drop down. Should you have a large family you would easily be able to store two of these bread bins on top of each other.
The only disadvantage I have found is that crumbs can lodge between the base and the lid; I keep a small paint brush for cleaning this out.

With a RRP of £43 it is widely available from around £30 in different shops – currently
(5/9/17) it is available on Amazon from £32.50.
Would I Recommend?

Yes, I would!
This is a lovely classy looking bread bin, that holds plenty, keeps the bread fresh and has the advantage of being able to store things on the top. I do spend a little while each week cleaning it inside and out, but it is worth it as the bread bin looks as good as new.
It may be pricy, but in my opinion, is well worth the money.
