Well Im just about to start on my second module of my degree at Bradford University and I don't live anywhere near Bradford.
The reason being is that it is a distance learning course which I can do part time whilst working full time.
I wanted to study a subject that was related to my work and Bradford came up trumps.
The course is specialising in dementia care, which is the area of which I work in and although I am living near a university it does not cover any of the modules that Bradford does.
I needed to go to Bradford for an induction and found that the University was easy to get to, but I had to find the Health Building and it was snowing , therefore I think I walked a little further than I needed. I then thought that I would have been probably better to get a taxi. Which I did on the return to the train station.
The university is very close to the town and Bradford has alot of interesting places to visit - though not for me on this visit.

The welcome was great and I managed to meet other people who were on the course and obtain their email addresses which have been keeping us in contact with each other.
We were all allocated a personal tutor shortly after the induction, who I have regularly emailed and the support has been good.
The assignments have to be in on certain dates and with work and home life this can be quite difficult, so you need to be disciplined to study. I did find that there is a great amount of reading to do.
However, I did pass my first module and am soon to start on the next.
The modules are posted to you and have all the essential reading required. They also send reccomended books to read and or buy to support the work that you are doing.
You do have a certain date to submit your assignments but if there is a geniune reason for you being unable to submit then they will extend.

Does this mean that the house is going to have books everywhere again? And with the children and their studies?? What have I let myself in for?
It will be worth it when I finish with the disitation and get the degree.
Although I am distant to the university I do have access to the library via the computer and if I wish can borrow books which go through my local university.
Staff have been extremely helpful and for people who would like to further themselves, but like to remain near their own home then I would certainly recomend distant learnig from Bradford University.

I do hope this is of help to future students, however I cannot express a view on campus life as I live at home.

management and languages at Bradford
Review of Bradford University by JamesRichardson

Advantages: cheap, friendly
Disadvantages:

Management students are somewhat separated from the main campus, with the management centre being on the opposite side of the town. In latter years of the course, only the language classes were held on campus, so if you're doing a pure management course you may consider living in the heaton area (as a lot of final year students tend to). The halls are of mixed quality, trinity were the best when I was there, appartments of seven people sharing a ...
...plenty on or near campus so you need rarely go into town. Cheap food abounds with curry houses two a penny. Good for rock fans with Rios Rock club in spitting distance, Maestros for clubbers in town. Decent gym and a few bars to relax in afterwards on campus, plenty of clubs and societies and good learning facilities if you get bored with all of this and decide to do some work! ... Read review

Civil Engineers / Environmental Managers - go elsewhere!
Review of Bradford University by Luso

Advantages: One only - Bradford is cheap.
Disadvantages: Many, read opinions.

...been temporarily a student at Bradford University, I can assure you it's not a nice place to go to. I manage to get a transfer out, but I was lucky. Bradford itself is a fairly quiet city, with an awful architecture and planning. The University of Bradford is a bottom of the class University except for the Peace Studies Department and the Management Centre based degrees. Even so, the Peace Studies department was under threat of being extinct as they ...
...to become an independent educational institution. It has a small library, a computer centre that simply does not work (they had their servers hacked recently, this shows how the professionals are) and a Sports Centre that is very poor. My experience was with the Civil and Environmental Engineering department. Once a good department, this has gone down hill big time, both in lecturer quantity and quality. Most professors left the department, and ... Read review

Best four years of my life
Review of Bradford University by mattchew

Advantages: Excellent reputation in Archaeology, Peace Studies, Management, Pharmacy
Disadvantages: Bands on tour don't often come to the city

...say that my time in Bradford has been some of the most enjoyable in my life. The department of Archaeological Sciences is unique in Europe for its integration of science and archaeology. The department offers five undergraduate degree programs, BSc Archaeology, BSc Archaeological Sciences, BSc BioArchaeology, BSc GeoArchaeology and BSc Geography and Archaeology. The course structure is well balanced allowing students a wide range of module options ...
...real benefit of studying at Bradford is unparalleled experience an undergraduate student can gain on the placement year. All students on the four year degree program spend between 9 and 14 months working in industry between the second and final years. Placements are available in a wide range of organisations allowing students to gain experience in field excavation and survey, archaeological illustration, geophysics, aerial survey, sites and monuments ... Good for Electronics
Review of Bradford University by Cei

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

Bradford Uni is a good place to study electronics. The department is friendly, helpful and do their best to ensure that you come out with a worthwhile degree. The workshops and other facilities reasonably fitted out. The department also benefit's from the multitude of on going research projects, which make the university one of the best in the communications field. The students union is also good, providing a lot of resources to help the student ... Read review

Good start for translators
Review of Bradford University by bayleaf

Advantages: good job prospects afterwards
Disadvantages: Bradford is up North (for all you Southerners out there!)

The Modern Language course at Bradford has the advantage that it prepares you well for the world of work. The emphasis is on translation and interpreting skills and a variety of topics / texts concerning political and economic issues are used. Literature is not obligatory but can be chosen as an option. The number of former-polytechnics-now-universities offering language courses has risen in recent years but it still worth going to one of the more ... Read review

Long Live Leeds
Review of Leeds University by  angelwds

Advantages: A fantastic, fun place to be
Disadvantages: You have to leave when you finish your course!

...and also the surrounding area (Bradford, Sheffield, Halifax) if you don't mind travelling now and again. There are loads of pubs around the university, some specifically catering for students, if it's just a drink you are after. Shopping... well that was fantastic too (have you guessed I loved it yet?), I only wish there had been Harvey Nick's in the early nineties... perhaps it's just as well that there wasn't! It's difficult to review a university without getting bogged down in your own course and experiences, especially when it was soooo long ago, but I hope I've managed to give you something useful in all this. The only thing left to say is... I hope you have as good a time as I did! Oh, and I did get my degree during all that fun I had........ Read review

Enough to keep you going
Review of Barnsley College by  judithritchie

Advantages: nice town, excellent academic support and pastoral system, range of alternative modern degree subjects, good studying services
Disadvantages: slow IT systems, poor accommodation, train services are bad, they shut the Union the heart of any HE institution!

...the train station right next door to Hallam University. There is a half hour X32 service to Leeds or Bradford (they seem to alternate their destinations and I have never found out why) leaving for Barnsley at 5 past and 25 to the hour all day long. The journey takes about 40 minutes, and is the fastest bus service available as it takes the motorway, and it is economical to the wallet, as it is about £2-3 for a day return. SO WHAT NOW? Well to tell you the truth, if you were heading for Barnsley College the first time via public transport, you would have a hard time finding it and getting to it! The College is above and heading away from the town centre where interchange is. One bus service runs from the bus station past the College per hour, the Wakefield bus at ten to. I would advise where possible to either take a taxi the first time... Read review

Open University - Keep On Learning.
Review of Open University Milton Keynes by  Gill_J

Advantages: You are learning at home in your own time.
Disadvantages: You have to be motivated and keep focussed.

...to become a well educated Aromatherapy Practioner. This had led me to my local University which is Bradford and I found that they did do a Practioner level course in Aromatherapy, now the thing is that the next in take is not until next year but the instructor was willing to let me take part in a few lessons and get the feel of the course, it takes 2 years so it is a big commitment to make. She then began to talk to me about the other courses that she advised people to take if they were considering working in the Health profession. She gave me two booklets and they were to make a big change to me. The Booklets were the Undergraduate Courses Catalogue and the Diploma and Degrees Prospectus of the Open University, now the one of interest to me initially was the Undergraduates Courses and on opening the A4 sizes thick booklet I...
