If you are a lover, or buyer, of Baked Beans I guess you will have noticed how expensive they have become lately. Well relatively so. Unless you are absolutely loaded, money wise, I would think that you could not have failed to notice this rapid price hike. Even the cheap beans at Netto, which started out at 9p a tin, are now 29p. Heinz Baked beans are over 50p a tin unless you get a good offer so what alternatives are there?.
Well to my mind Branston Baked Beans are a good option and I shall try and tell you why.
At present a multi-pack of 4 large tins of Branston Baked Beans, hereafter to be called BBB, retail in Netto for a mere £1.19. That makes them slightly cheaper than Netto's traditional cheap beans which were ok for 9p a tin, but not for 29p.
Branston of course are more well known for their pickles and sauces which are consistently good.
Each tin has 420g's of BBB coming in at 366 calories. I think this is lower than Heinz beans but do not quote me.
The sauce is a rich, thick tomato sauce which is a little darker than others. There is an ample amount of sauce but not too much. Sometimes you find that the lower priced baked beans are swimming in a watery tomato sauce but not these beans.
The baked beans have a nice texture, in that they are fairly soft, even if like me you enjoy eating them cold, and unheated through, occasionally. Sometimes cheap baked beans are a little hard and tasteless but not BBB. With these you can actually tell that they are a bean and they taste full of fibre.
The salt content is a little higher than recommended but I think that you can buy a lower salt variety. Of course these will no doubt be a little pricier.
Overall.
So in these penny pinching times why not stock up on a few packs of these tasty beans. They have a couple of years date on them before they expire and will provide tasty snacks such as:-
Skinheads on a raft a.k.a Beans on Toast. Will go well with eggs and or chips. Make a great corned beef hash. Are a healthy vegetable option. Kids usually love them. Are a cheap and versatile addition to your store cupboard.

We tried Branston beans for the first time quite recently - they were probably the best beans that I've tasted - I certainly preferred them to Heinz. Never mind the price - in Switzerland back in October they were around 1,50 a tin! Richard.

About a month ago I had these on toast, and although they weren't my fave variety they were still very tasty xx
Advantages: Cheapest of the high-end of the market brand beans, Highest bean and tomato content on the market, Disadvantages: None really. Can get cheaper beans but they are in my view of inferior quality and content.
