I was bought the Braun 5580 by my husband for Christmas (it was on my list)!! Normally retails for about Ł60 and was bought from Boots.
I've been using it religiously for the past 2 months....probably about 4 times a week. I use it on my underarms, legs (upper and lower) and bikini line. I have also used it on my upper lip and my husbands chin. This proved too painful for both of us and we've not done it again....so, although you do get an attachment that enables you to use it on your face, you have to have a very high pain threshold to be able to do so.
I've always shaved and occasionally have everything waxed, usually when we're going away on holiday or for a special occasion. I shave my legs and underarms everyday and my bikini line every other day (I find it gets stubbly otherwise)...not an attractive look!
The Braun works really well on short hairs and is, in fact, much more comfortable if your hairs are quite short (about 1-2mms). It was also very easy to use....you get 3 attachments - 1 for small areas like face or bikini line, 1 for sensitive areas with less tweezers in and the last one is the Full Monty. I use the Full Monty as it does it quicker and I figure the less time I have to endure it the better!
You also have 2 speeds on the Braun and you can have it slower with the sensitive attachment on if you're struggling to bear the pain.
I found it really great for my bikini line and it gives a much better feel than with a razor.....the hairs always grow back very bristly with shaving but this stays smooth for ages. It's also very good for your underarms although very awkward to do yourself. I usually get my husband to do it for me but have managed it myself a couple of times. I actually think that the hairs on my underarms and my bikini line have grown back less dense than before.
However, I have been very disappointed with the results on my legs. My legs are quite hairy and I remove the hairs from the upper and lower parts of my leg...normally I shave them daily which produces a nice smooth effect but is a real pain to have to do all the time. I thought the Braun would mean that I wouldn't have to pay my leg hairs so much attention but it hasn't quite worked out that way. After 2 weeks of epilating every other day, I had the most awful ingrowing hairs on my legs. It didn't seem to affect my underarms or bikini line but my legs were covered in them. One or two got a bit infected and went red and if I ran my hands up my legs, all I could feel were little lumps where the hairs were growing under the skin. I tried exfoliating which brought a few of them out but not all.
So, although I still use it about 3 times a week, I don't use it on my legs anymore. It's great for my underarms and bikini line though and well worth the money for those.

Advantages: No mess, easy clean and cheaper than salon waxing. Disadvantages: Most of the multi-heads are ineffectual, no trimmer attachment, pain and a whole pile of skincare things that they don't tell you in the manual.
