I’ve always been the odd one out in my group of friends, simply because I don’t straighten my hair. For a long time now I’ve had boring, lifeless, straight hair and for years I’ve yearned for those gorgeous corkscrew curls. In fact, isn’t it funny how people with straight hair crave curly hair and people with curly hair crave straight hair?

Anyway, I’ve had a couple of tacky curling tongs for Christmas, which I tried a few times and then shoved into a draw, never to be retrieved again. Recently, I seriously thought about bringing my hair to life and happened to be passing by Boots at the same time. So I thought, it’s Christmas soon why not treat myself? And ten minutes later I was standing outside Boots with a new curling tong-a moment that I’d dreamt of but somehow or another had never got round to making sure it would happen.

The only piece of advice that I’d been given on the choice of curling tongs was ‘don’t buy anything by Babybliss’. So, I glanced at the selection and the Braun C20S seemed to stand out with it’s steam function and the fact that it was cordless. I took it to the checkout under the impression that it was £20.99, but in fact it had been reduced to £14.00-bargain!

I arrived home and set about admiring my little beauty gadget and pouring over the instructions. I have to admit, the first time I looked at the instructions, it did confuse me for a while but I do have a bit of a slow brain and I’d never owned anything like this before. It tuned out that a number of styles are able to be performed by the tong; if you use the tong on its own then the result will be tight ringlets, if the tong is used with the addition of the brush (which is included in the package) then loose wavy effects and flicks can be created. But this is not all! Not that I need it, but the tong also has the ability to straighten your hair. So, in total the curling tong can perform eight styles, which are more or less the same, but I still find this quite impressive.

Unlike most curling tongs, the Braun C20S is cordless which brings with it the disadvantage of having to buy ‘energy cells’. I still think that having a cordless curling tong is well worth the money though because of its simple convenience. For example, a few nights after I had bought the tong I was getting ready to go to a party. I had just curled my friend’s hair to perfection but we were already running late and my hair still needed doing. So, the decision was to curl my hair on the way to the party in the car. To be honest I did think this would be a disaster, but my hair tuned out great and I didn’t even manage to singe my scalp!

Another good feature of this curling tong is the steam feature. This sounds complicated, but even for me it isn’t. All you have to do is fill a tiny water reservoir with water and then fix it on to the end of the tong. When you have a piece of hair curled around the tong, you press the water reservoir down and it produces steam. The steaming function is meant to make your hair look lovely and shiny and make it hold in that style for quite a long time. I certainly didn’t believe this, but the next morning after dancing the night away I still had my curls! They might have been a bit loose by then but it puts up a great competition for other curling tongs.

One word of warning! Do not touch the curling tong when it’s fully heated up. I’ve done this by accident twice and even if you leave your hand there for a split second it still hurts a lot and you can get blisters! The only real reason that you might not want to buy this curling tong is because it makes the ends of your hair quite dry, but a regular trim of the old bonnet will put this right!

Lastly, don’t be put off using a curling tong because of your hair type! The Braun C20S will still work wonders if your hair is thick, fine or in between. My hair is quite fine and my friend’s hair is quite thick but we can still style our hair to achieve roughly the same result. You just need to experiment on how long you need to hold the tong in your hair for and how many steams you give it. After that it becomes a piece of cake!

So if you’re looking for a portable, steaming hair tong to bring your hair back to life then I do recommend the Braun C20S.
