To blend... to mix or mingle; to mix so that the components cannot be distinguished. At the moment I am experiencing the delights of weaning my six month old son. I had been using the various assortments of ready-made baby food on offer, but felt that I should perhaps make some of my own concoctions. So, I tried to blend half a banana (ok not exactly a recipe) in our old ancient electric blender that hadn't been used for years. After quite some time and a lot of noise, I was still left with a fairly lumpy mixture. No good for my baby!
So I invested in a new Braun Hand Blender. Multiquick MR 400 PLUS. I decided on this one because at £9.99 from my local Morrison's store, it wasn't going to break the bank. It also looked like it would be simple and easy to use. So here is the low down... ****The Blender****
A white handheld blender that separates into two parts. The motor part which attaches to the shaft with blade. There is a blue on/off switch located on the motor part. The blender is 300 watts and does feel like it could be more powerful. The shaft has an anti-splashing design. ****ACCESSORIES****
Included with the blender is a clear plastic mixing beaker. This is handy but you can also blend your ingredients in any other vessel. A wall bracket so that you can hang your blender up for convenience. ****HOW TO OPERATE****
Insert the motor part into the shaft with blade and turn until it locks. To avoid splashing, insert the blender into the vessel first and then press the on/off switch to on. Continue blending until desired consistency is reached. ****CLEANING****
The motor part can only be cleaned with a damp cloth. All other parts are dish-washer safe. The instructions point out that if processing foods with colour, such as carrots, then some discolouration may occur. They suggest wiping these parts wih vegetable oil first and then cleaning. ****ACCESSORIES****
Available at a retailer or Braun service centres. HC-4 High speed chopper for onions, garlic, chilli's e.t.c.
****MAYONNAISE RECIPE EXAMPLE**** 200-250ml oil 1 egg (yolk and white) 1tbsp lemon juice or vinegar. Salt and pepper to taste.
Put all ingredients into beaker and blend until the oil emulsifies. Without switching off, slowly move blender up and down until the mayonnaise is well combined. ****BABY VEGETABLE DINNER RECIPE****
1 Carrot 1 Potato 4 florets of Brocolli Handful of peas. Boil vegetables until tender. Drain water. Blend all ingredients until a smooth consistency is reached. Add water if required.
****CONCLUSION**** I am very happy with this blender. It is easy to use, simple to clean and takes up hardly any room at all. In the past I have had food processors that take up so much room and use so many different parts that I have been put off using them. This is completely unlike them, I find it to be quick and efficient. Good value for money.
