The Superocean is one hell of a watch.Big, tough, macho.It is issued to the U.S.Navy Seals, the elite combat division of the U.S. navy, so that tells you how tough it is.It is water-proof to 1000meters, yes, really,and features a helium valve to aid de-compression when rising from such depths.A large, screw-down crown is fitted,again to aid its strength.Also fitted is a glare-proof 3.7mm sapphire crystal. Be warned, you won't break it, but it wiil scratch.
The face is very clear, mine being a beautiful shade of deep blue, with clear numerals,luminous, of course, a date window at 3 o'clock, and a sweep-second hand finished in red for maximum legibility.All very simple, and very easy to read in a hurry.
The watch is constructed from highest quality stainless steel, solid throughout, and fitted with a "Professional" steel bracelet fitted with an expansion buckle to fit over wet suits. It's also available in white and yellow gold, but they are out of my price range!I've also bought a blue diver's strap, and a blue leather one, both about £60 each.
Toughness comes as standard.It's diameter is 41.5mm, it's 15.40mm thick, and weighs in at 72.20grms.That's one substantial watch!
This a mechanical, self-winding watch, and uses Breitling's 17 calibre movement, operating at 28,800vph, and carried on 25 jewels. Beautiful!The crown is non screw-locked as are all the rest of the Aeromarine range.Not as accurate as quartz, but who buys a serious quartz watch?
A range of colours are available for the face, including blue, yellow,black and orange, with straps to match.
I have had mine now for 4 years, and it is as good as new. Servicing is recommended at approx. 2 year intervals, and is likely to cost £160-£200. That's pricey, but so is everything about this watch.
Don't expect it to keep perfect time, no mechanical watch does, but instead just look at the way the second-hand jerkily moves around the face, poetry in motion!
Now, to the bad bit!The price......Currently the list price is £1,110 with a Professional bracelet.Ouch!
But look at it this way. If you own the watch for 10 years, it has cost you £111 per year, and that's not a great deal at all. Indeed a small price to pay for quality.
Discounts are hard to find at authorized dealers, and they are really the only place to buy. Beware deals where there is no box or papers, and look carefully for fakes, they really are very good.
The Superocean is a delight to own and will last for many, many years, and in years to come it will still be worth at least half of what you paid for it.Can't say that about a Seiko, can you?

...then I came across the Breitling Superocean series and I got one used pretty “cheap”.
Superocean came in basically two models in 2001: Superocean and Superocean Professional. I will describe my Superocean Professional in this review.
My Superocean Professional is a 2001 model and it is one amazing watch. It is of course a mechanical watch and it is self-winding. This means that if you wear it, it will always keep on ticking :-) It has a Breitling ...
...it keeps on ticking for 42 hours if you don’t wear it.
The Superocean Professional is waterproof. Or maybe waterproof is a bit of an understatement…it is actually waterproof to 1524 meter (5000 ft) and you can see that the watch is built for this. One thing that gives it away is the glass which is almost 4 mm thick! The glass is of course sapphire and glareproffed on both sides.

Breitling's best value watch

Breitling introduced the original Superocean in the 50s. and it has kept on going strong ever since. It was designed for use with military divers, and it serves it purpose very well. It is waterproof to 1500m/5000ft, which is way more than any mere mortal will go. To cope with such pressures (150ATM exterior/3ATM interior), it has a decompression valve near the 10 o clock mark which releases gasses when the internal pressure goes too high.

...is not essential. There are Breitling chronographs around for abou this price but I find them too small for me. This brings me on to one of the love/hate topics of this watch - it's size. Its diagonal (10-4 o clock) diameter is 42.00mm. This is very large compared to most watches, and it is around 15mm thick. It tips the scales at just under 200g, including Professional bracelet. I'm nearly two years into owning a Superocean Chronmetre with blue face and yes i still get as excited today as the day i first put it on. Everything about it is quality, i get no end of comments from admirers and it still looks brand new.
I got the sales person to throw in a blue leather strap so even the approved retailers are open to a deal. It does lose time if you don't keep it regularly wound but thats a small price to pay for what is essentially one of the best looking watches around, if your thinking about buying one i suggest you do so, you will not regret it for one second, even if that second is a little late on occasion!

hi i have a lot of watches ranging from zenith which i think have the best movements to brietllng these include rolex omega rado etc
now i bought a superocean in auckland from the main dealer mansors and have had nothing but probs since i arrived home in the uk after picking it up at customs (duty free)it had a problem winding up the crown since then in a period of two yearsi it has been in repaiir for say 15 months now i have it back lets see how it goes its a nice watch but aballache up to yet

In a word: Unreliable.
Year 1: Stopped working. Had to return to maker for repair.
Year 5: Rotating bezel lost its spring loaded anti-clockwise system. It now freely rotates.
Year 12: The axle (sorry - don't know correct term) that halds bracelet to the watch broke.
Year 12: Can no longer screw down the waterproof winder knob. Possibly stripped thread inside.
Give me Seiko anyday for reliablity.
