I decided to buy a bread maker and start making my own bread. I dreamt with waking up in the morning to the smell of freshly baked bread and imagined slicing the still steaming juicy loaf, spreading soft butter on a thick slice which would melt in the warm white bread.
At the same time, I wanted a stylish good looking bread maker to match the rest of my kitchen appliances.
I looked around and this one caught my eye from the start. It was beautiful; the one I bought had Anthony Warrell Thompson's name on it and it was manufactured by Breville, what more could one ask for?
Although the price was not as competitive as the other bread makers on the market (it retailed, and it still does, at £100 approx.) I thought it was probably worth it. It had lots of features I like: - you can bake different loaf sizes - you can choose the type of crust - you have a menu selection - there is a nut dispenser (wow) - you can watch your bread being cooked through the viewing window and using the little light switch! amazing! - pull out recipe booklet
Well, the break maker of my dreams! Needless to say I bought it.
My first loaf wasn't a great success. I though well, the inexperience, let's have another go. The next one was better however I didn't experience the smell of the succulent fresh warm bread I was expecting. I kept trying, with different types of flour, with ready made mixtures... the crust was too dry and hard no matter what settings I used... Then I tried a recipe for nutty bread, excitedly placed my walnuts in the nut dispenser and patiently waited for the sound of the compartment opening and releasing the nuts onto the bread.... aaaahhhh...it didn't give me the experience I was so longing for; the nuts didn't mix well and they went to the bottom of the loaf.
With time, I started buying ready made bread again and the bread maker was left relegated to the corner of my kitchen worktop, where it looked magnificent, all shiny and silvery, so posh and useless....
After a few months I decided to give it another go. I was sure there was more to it, I must have done something wrong. I tried a white loaf ... results even more disappointing than before... the bread would not raise and would not cook! Tried again, thinking I had used the wrong settings but... same results... my bread maker didn't make bread anymore... something had gone wrong.
So there it is, with it's impressive presence yet not so useful purpose.
After my sad experience with my bread maker, I have seen other cheaper bread makers in action which produce the fresh bread smell I was looking for... I had not bought another one though...
It's now even losing it's looks... silver covering on the cover is falling apart now as well.

(+) The best bread you will ever taste, on a timer just ready in time for breakfast. (-) If you can't wait since it smells so good... you might burn your fingers like me!
My breadmaker was a lot chaeper than this and bakes lovely bread! Usually the problems are down to the type of ingredients and quantities i.e if the milk/water is too cool it won't rise as well. x
