The Breville CM3 also comes by the name of Anthony Worrall Thompson "the fat chef" ok so they dont use "the fat chef" in its title but you know the guy i mean
I purchased my expresso/cappuccino maker from Ebay brand new for the princely sum of £35 but if you were to purchase it from an electrical retailer it s list price is £65.
The CM3 comes with some features not available on some other coffee makers costing a lot more money. It has a warming tray on top of the maker which is essential in my opinion as the coffee doesnt come out boiling hot like from a kettle so if you dont pre warm the cup or cups you are using the coffee isnt particularly hot from any home coffee maker. It also comes with Two expresso cups and saucers.you also get a small stainless steel milk frothing jug provided.
The coffee making process is easy once you get used to the order to do things.
First fill the water reservoir to the max level which takes just over a litre, you can do this simply by sliding it out from the back of the machine.
Then remove the filter holder by rotating it from left to right, then add the coffee to the the filter basket there are marks visible inside either 1or2 for the number of cups required. Then with the back of the filling spoon press the coffee down making sure its evenly compressed.
Place the filter holder back into the machine rotating it so that it clicks firmly into position.
Plug machine into socket and turn on power switch, this also starts the warming tray located on the top of the machine. In about 1 minute the red pump light glows on the front of the machine, position the cup or cups under the nozzle press the pump button and the coffee starts to flow into the cup/s. When you have the cups/s about 1/3 to 1/2 full turn off the pump button.Remove cup/s from under machine.
Now fill milk jug to about 1/3 full and place it under the milk frothing nozzle which swings out from machine turn switch on side and begin frothing milk to required consistency and temperature for a decent cup of cappucino you need about 1/3 coffee 1/3 milk and 1/3 froth.
A good tip with this or any machine you need to run some steam out of the nozzle after you have frothed the milk to keep it clear or sometimes it can clog up with milk residue if this happens you need to flush it through before using again.
It makes a brilliantly frothy latte or cappucino for a fraction of the cost of a starbucks or costa. Also being a "pumped" maker the pressure is 15 bar and not 4 bar like some "steam" machines which means the "crema" you get on the top of the coffee is far superior.Being a pumped system you can also make another cup or more straight away but if you have one of the steam machines you have to wait a few minutes before it cools down.
Also use a good make of coffee I would recommend lavazza or for a more expensive option starbucks or costa will sell you a packet of the blend they use in their coffee houses.
Advantages: Low cost, pump action, good taste Disadvantages: Finicky to use, spares difficult to obtain
This machine is my first pump action espresso maker. I purchased it for about £45 from Comet. Previously, I have had steam machines, either stove top or self contained, but the latter needed frequent descaling because of the hardness of the water in my area, did not make pukka espresso and gave up the ghost after about 12 months.
When the correct amount of coffee, ground to the right degree of fineness, tamped with the right amount of pressure is ... ...crema foam on top. The capuccino I'm told is excellent as well. However, if the coffee is ground too finely, tamped too hard or slightly over filled, the machine will squirt hot water through the seal above the filter basket and you will end up with a diluted cup of coffee containing a fair amount of grounds. This winds me up first thing in the morning.
I have tried various brands of coffee and ginding my own, but have had to settle on two or three ...

...noisy. I did phone Breville when I had trouble with the first and they told me they took that model out of production ages ago... I havnt tried any coffee in it yet because, although I have put through 2 tanks of water the water that comes out smells highly of chlorine and looks cloudy so I dont fancy drinking it. I have also got a little stove top jobbie which makes excellent coffee so this CW3 has got hard work to compare to the simple old fashioned ...

I decided to buy a bread maker and start making my own bread. I dreamt with waking up in the morning to the smell of freshly baked bread and imagined slicing the still steaming juicy loaf, spreading soft butter on a thick slice which would melt in the... more
