I recently had a major catastrophe happen to me. I had finished work at Midnight, and got home about ten past. I put the kettle on ** All sing, Aussie put the kettle on, Aussie put the kettle on, Aussie put the kettle on, We'll all have Tea**..... What happened ?? Pssssfthhhht.... Nothing...... Here I was, absolutely gagging for a cuppa, with a mouth dryer than Gandhi's flip-flops, (please, take no offence at that comment, nothing is meant by it) and no kettle...... Horror of horrors !!!!!!! So, after having to boil a pan of water to make not only my cuppa, but Mr Aussie's coffee and Georgia's bottles for the night. I went to my bed, very disgruntled. I should explain a little about my disgruntled state here.....
We recently moved house, and bought our very own house, instead of renting like we had done for the last 12 and a half years. We (being me), decided that I wanted everything new in the kitchen department. I searched and searched for a new kettle to go with all the other appliances I had picked out. All my kitchen appliances are stainless steel. I wanted something fast and efficient, as well as quiet. So, I went for the Breville Lightning Stainless Steel Kettle. However, this is not a review about said kettle, as after only 3 months of use..... Psssshtfffft...... As explained above !!
I wanted something in Stainless Steel again, to match my kitchen (no point in having Stainless Steel and then a white kettle now is there ?) so, I opted for the above kettle. It was on offer at Argos, but I will tell you the price later in the review.
The kettle is a very nice, shiny Stainless Steel, with a soft-grip handle. It has a translucent spout and side panels, to better judge the amount of water you need to put in for making said cup of tea, coffee or whatever beverage you prefer. In my case, a tea for me, coffee for Mr Aussie, and bottles for Georgia.
It is cordless, with a base that will let you use the kettle left or right-handed, with a removable, washable anti-scale filter inside it. What's in the Box ? ===============

The Instructions for Use. These things are always handy for explaining features about the kettle.
Using for the first time. =================
Your kettle may surprise you when you plug it in for the first time, as it has a cool feature. It illuminates as soon as it is sat nice and snug on it's base. It also changes colour, from red, to yellow, green, purple, blue. When you switch it on, it will go red, to indicate that it is boiling. It turns a darker red all the time it is boiling to indicate how near to fully boiled it is too, which is a neat feature. It's like a mood enhancing feature in the kitchen, as when the kettle is not boiling and just sat on it's base, it changes all the time through the colour spectrum.
Now, I don't know about you, but I don't know who has put their hands inside the kettle before I receive it in it's nice, posh-looking black box with a picture of said kettle on it. So, I always fill the kettle with the right amount of water to be full, and boil it, then tip it away. It makes me feel as if I have sterilised the inside, and now I know that no germs are going to be passed on to me by some poor unsuspecting water. I do this process 3 times, in order to fully ensure NO germs !! It also recommends you do this in the instruction leaflet.
Quiet Boil Feature. ==============
The kettle has a feature called Quiet Boil. This means, that while some kettles make a thunderous noise when in the boiling process, this one does not. It is called Whisper Boil. It is, however, affected by the hardness of the water in your area, and the amount of scale you have let build up in your kettle. I clean mine out every week. It is easy, as it has a removable scale filter, which is washable, as I mentioned earlier in the review, and it only takes a few moments of your time. To lessen the build-up of scale, I always use water from a water-filter to put in the kettle. It makes the water taste better, and stops the tannin build-up on the top of your tea !!
Unique Keep-Warm Mode. ====================
The Breville Spectra has a unique feature, which I have never seen in another kettle. Keep-Warm Mode. This means, that there is a button on the top of the kettle, located near the handle. If you push this either before, during, or just after you boil the kettle, the water in the kettle will keep warm for a maximum of 12 hours. It is ideal for when you are watching the TV, and don't want to pop back in the kitchen in case you miss something good (like a converted try in the Rugby World Cup **come on you Wallabies and All-Blacks** Sorry Home Nations, I am an Aussie at heart)
This Keep-Warm facility, will keep the water at an ideal temperature of 77°c, which is good. Also note, the Keep-Warm feature WILL NOT boil the water.
Cleaning The Kettle. ===============
Firstly, make sure the kettle is cold to the touch, as I do not want you burning yourself.
Use a soft, damp cloth to wash the outside of the kettle, taking care to stay away from the underside of it. Afterwards, polish kettle back to a high shine with a soft, dry cloth. Your kettle will always look like it has just come out of the box then.
DO NOT USE ANY SORT OF ABRASIVE CLEANING MATERIALS, OR STEEL WOOL TO CLEAN YOUR KETTLE. It will scratch the surface of your kettle, and invalidate your warranty !!
Cleaning the Filter. ==============
Please make sure you do this when the kettle is cold, and not attached to the cordless base. I don't want any of you going BANG !!
Make sure the kettle is empty. Open the lid. Hold the top of the filter and pull it towards you. Watch how you are pulling it up, as you may damage the filter. You don't have to use force to get it out, it should come out quite easily.
Clean with a soft brush. I use a spare baby bottle brush, which I keep just for that purpose. In Hard-Water areas, you may have to use a de-scaling agent, it says so in the instructions. Our area is not so bad, so I don't need to use anything, just a rub with the brush suffices.
Make sure there is no loose scale on the filter by running it under the water while you are brushing it. Then, make sure there is nothing on your hands that will taint the water, before you attempt to put the filter back into the kettle. Otherwise, your water will taste funny. Replace the filter back inside the kettle, being careful not to press on the mesh, or it will damage the filter, and make it useless.
Guarantee. =========
The Kettle comes with 12 months Manufacturers Guarantee, but I purchased extra cover through Argos themselves. I cannot remember what I paid for the extra cover, something like £3.99 for 3 years cover (I did say SOMETHING-LIKE)
Replacement Parts. ==============
You can get replacement parts for the kettle by ringing the Customer Services Department on 0161 6216900, and telling them what you have, and what you need. They tell you up-to-date prices, including P&P.
Price. ====
I paid a bargain price for my kettle, £37.49, as it was on offer at Argos.

Rating. =====
I rate this product 5 stars out of 5 for it's ability to get me a cuppa after a hard slog at work in next-to-no-time, plus all the additional features.
Advantages: Funky and quiet Disadvantages: Pours badly
...noticed that our faithful old breville kettle was starting to die in as much as it wasn't cutting out - great for steam cleaning the tiles but not so good on the kettle or our electric bill! And finally today it gave up the ghost and I had to hold a little ceremony for it as I put it on the ever growing pile of items to be taken to the local tip.
It was sad as it had lived with us for 4 years and expired just as I was gagging for a brew which compounded ... ...And that kettle was a Breville Spectra everchanging illuminated kettle. So in my desparation for a cup of tea I walked over to Argos and purchased this kettle for £44.99.
This kettle has everything our old kettle had but is new and improved by the looks of things. It is still a 1.7 litre capacity and it still has a fast boil 3000w element and it is a very similar shape. It sits on base with an enclosed element and it can be moved around 360 degrees. ...

Advantages: KEEP WARM FACILITY, GREAT LIGHT SHOW Disadvantages: COOLS DOWN TOO QUICKLY IF KEEP WARM IS NOT USED
The Breville spectra is the new generation of kettles mixing the functionality of a kettle with the soothing effect of soft "ever changing" lighting. I have bought my breville about 5 months ago mainly due to the fact that my last kettle was on its last legs due to having a baby and the constant need for boiling water (I think it just had enough).
The Breville kettle was not my first choice as I wanted something completely stainless steel to match ... ...it might as well match-what I told my husband). I saw the Kettle in one of my catalogues and was quite intrigued by it. It was stainless steel but the pictures showed three different coloured lighting in three different pictures. I subsequently went to see it in my local electrical store to see what it was all about. I asked the salesperson to plug it in for me (local stores are always helpful) and I was hooked. The lights were not just tri-coloured ...

...he came back with the Breville Spectra Keep Warm system kettle. The number one gimmick with this kettle is that it changes colour whilst it is on standby, a soft ever changing illumination. To me this looks kind of cool and funky when it is on the kitchen shelf. The kettle has see through plastic on the spout, half of the handle and on a little button on the front that says Breville and this is where it changes colour. The colours are fairly bright ... ...on. The colours change from orange, to red, to purple, to blue to green and to yellow and then follow the pattern again. I would say each colour lasts for about 5 seconds and then fades into the other colour so it changes quite rapidly. The rest of the kettle surface has a chrome effect and to me feels a bit plasticy but the good thing with it being plastic is that it is quite light and also does not make the outside of the kettle really hot when ...

Advantages: Light shows, Keep warm function, Disadvantages: Novelty can wear off
I bought this kettle as a novelty Christmas present for my girlfriend as her other kettle was only 800 Watts and took an eternity to boil. This one is much more powerful, rated at 3KW and boils very quickly indeed. The light show is very entertaining, in fact so much so, that I wanted to put it in the living room. My girlfriend objected for some reason ?
The way it slowly fades from one colour to the next is very asthetically pleasing. When you ... ...changes from blue to red as the water heats up. My only niggle is that as soon as it has boiled it switches back to colour changing mode straight away. I would have preferred it to stay red for a while to indicate the water is hot. Handy for kids to know this too.
The keep warm function I suppose is a great feature for larger households that use the kettle often. I rarely use the function myself.
Overall I would recommend this kettle to anyone. ...

Advantages: keep hot button. Disadvantages: poor safety - the lid pops open when in mid boil!
...I returned it to breville and they sent me another one. The same thing happened again. THIS IS NOT A SAFE PRODUCT. It has ruined my kitchen upboards and has scolded me with hot water. I believe that this product should be RECALLED!
The boil is too long and the lid doesn't shut properly so that this, in my opinion, makes this product exceptionally unsafe.
Apart from changing the kettle, Breville or pulse products, do not want to know. Stay away ...
