I recently had a major catastrophe happen to me. I had finished work at Midnight, and got home about ten past. I put the kettle on ** All sing, Aussie put the kettle on, Aussie put the kettle on, Aussie put the kettle on, We'll all have Tea**..... What happened ?? Pssssfthhhht.... Nothing...... Here I was, absolutely gagging for a cuppa, with a mouth dryer than Gandhi's flip-flops, (please, take no offence at that comment, nothing is meant by it) and no kettle...... Horror of horrors !!!!!!! So, after having to boil a pan of water to make not only my cuppa, but Mr Aussie's coffee and Georgia's bottles for the night. I went to my bed, very disgruntled. I should explain a little about my disgruntled state here.....
We recently moved house, and bought our very own house, instead of renting like we had done for the last 12 and a half years. We (being me), decided that I wanted everything new in the kitchen department. I searched and searched for a new kettle to go with all the other appliances I had picked out. All my kitchen appliances are stainless steel. I wanted something fast and efficient, as well as quiet. So, I went for the Breville LightningStainless Steel Kettle. However, this is not a review about said kettle, as after only 3 months of use..... Psssshtfffft...... As explained above !!
I wanted something in Stainless Steel again, to match my kitchen (no point in having Stainless Steel and then a white kettle now is there ?) so, I opted for the above kettle. It was on offer at Argos, but I will tell you the price later in the review.
The kettle is a very nice, shiny Stainless Steel, with a soft-grip handle. It has a translucent spout and side panels, to better judge the amount of water you need to put in for making said cup of tea, coffee or whatever beverage you prefer. In my case, a tea for me, coffee for Mr Aussie, and bottles for Georgia.
It is cordless, with a base that will let you use the kettle left or right-handed, with a removable, washable anti-scale filter inside it. What's in the Box ? ===============

The Instructions for Use. These things are always handy for explaining features about the kettle.
Using for the first time. =================
Your kettle may surprise you when you plug it in for the first time, as it has a cool feature. It illuminates as soon as it is sat nice and snug on it's base. It also changes colour, from red, to yellow, green, purple, blue. When you switch it on, it will go red, to indicate that it is boiling. It turns a darker red all the time it is boiling to indicate how near to fully boiled it is too, which is a neat feature. It's like a mood enhancing feature in the kitchen, as when the kettle is not boiling and just sat on it's base, it changes all the time through the colour spectrum.
Now, I don't know about you, but I don't know who has put their hands inside the kettle before I receive it in it's nice, posh-looking black box with a picture of said kettle on it. So, I always fill the kettle with the right amount of water to be full, and boil it, then tip it away. It makes me feel as if I have sterilised the inside, and now I know that no germs are going to be passed on to me by some poor unsuspecting water. I do this process 3 times, in order to fully ensure NO germs !! It also recommends you do this in the instruction leaflet.
Quiet Boil Feature. ==============
The kettle has a feature called Quiet Boil. This means, that while some kettles make a thunderous noise when in the boiling process, this one does not. It is called Whisper Boil. It is, however, affected by the hardness of the water in your area, and the amount of scale you have let build up in your kettle. I clean mine out every week. It is easy, as it has a removable scale filter, which is washable, as I mentioned earlier in the review, and it only takes a few moments of your time. To lessen the build-up of scale, I always use water from a water-filter to put in the kettle. It makes the water taste better, and stops the tannin build-up on the top of your tea !!
Unique Keep-Warm Mode. ====================
The Breville Spectra has a unique feature, which I have never seen in another kettle. Keep-Warm Mode. This means, that there is a button on the top of the kettle, located near the handle. If you push this either before, during, or just after you boil the kettle, the water in the kettle will keep warm for a maximum of 12 hours. It is ideal for when you are watching the TV, and don't want to pop back in the kitchen in case you miss something good (like a converted try in the Rugby World Cup **come on you Wallabies and All-Blacks** Sorry Home Nations, I am an Aussie at heart)
This Keep-Warm facility, will keep the water at an ideal temperature of 77°c, which is good. Also note, the Keep-Warm feature WILL NOT boil the water.
Cleaning The Kettle. ===============
Firstly, make sure the kettle is cold to the touch, as I do not want you burning yourself.
Use a soft, damp cloth to wash the outside of the kettle, taking care to stay away from the underside of it. Afterwards, polish kettle back to a high shine with a soft, dry cloth. Your kettle will always look like it has just come out of the box then.
DO NOT USE ANY SORT OF ABRASIVE CLEANING MATERIALS, OR STEEL WOOL TO CLEAN YOUR KETTLE. It will scratch the surface of your kettle, and invalidate your warranty !!
Cleaning the Filter. ==============
Please make sure you do this when the kettle is cold, and not attached to the cordless base. I don't want any of you going BANG !!
Make sure the kettle is empty. Open the lid. Hold the top of the filter and pull it towards you. Watch how you are pulling it up, as you may damage the filter. You don't have to use force to get it out, it should come out quite easily.
Clean with a soft brush. I use a spare baby bottle brush, which I keep just for that purpose. In Hard-Water areas, you may have to use a de-scaling agent, it says so in the instructions. Our area is not so bad, so I don't need to use anything, just a rub with the brush suffices.
Make sure there is no loose scale on the filter by running it under the water while you are brushing it. Then, make sure there is nothing on your hands that will taint the water, before you attempt to put the filter back into the kettle. Otherwise, your water will taste funny. Replace the filter back inside the kettle, being careful not to press on the mesh, or it will damage the filter, and make it useless.
Guarantee. =========
The Kettle comes with 12 months Manufacturers Guarantee, but I purchased extra cover through Argos themselves. I cannot remember what I paid for the extra cover, something like £3.99 for 3 years cover (I did say SOMETHING-LIKE)
Replacement Parts. ==============
You can get replacement parts for the kettle by ringing the Customer Services Department on 0161 6216900, and telling them what you have, and what you need. They tell you up-to-date prices, including P&P.
Price. ====
I paid a bargain price for my kettle, £37.49, as it was on offer at Argos.
