My old sandwich maker had finally bitten the dust after it lost it's non stick plating, probably due to my having to scrape the contents out on nearly every occasion-not so with the Breville TR40.
This cafe style appliance is medium sized but amongst the smallest in the range of new pannini style toasters, with an attractive chrome finish.
It has quality non-stick plates which unlike run-of -the -mill sandwich toasters, means you don't have to chisel out your sandwich with sharp kitchen device! It has an automatically adjustable floating top plate which means that your sandwich will not get squashed to smithereens, however thick it is, or whatever the filling.
The floating hinge can be adjusted to either sit on top on the sandwich pressing it gently or can be left open to make toasted open sandwiches where the top plate radiates enough heat to melt cheese.
The toaster boasts 2000 watts of power, heats up very quickly and lets you know when it's ready with a green light. You pop your sandwich on the plate, (without the need for butter or marge) and lower the handle. Sandwiches take about 3-4 minutes to cook. When it's cooked, the sandwich simply slides out with ease.
You can be much more adventurous which your Breville as it toasts all sorts of bread; foccacia, pannini, pitta, bagettes, slices of regular bread. I've been using wraps with various fillings and they are really sucessful. My husband even cooked quesadillas on it as the hot plate is large enough to take a small tortilla.
Cleaning is really simple. The top plate is completely smooth with no lip so it can be wiped over with a damp cloth. The bottom plate has a small lip but it no problem to clean at all.
It is such a different experience to using the 'cut and seal' type toasters that end up with melted cheese and grease running down the side. My kitchen does not end up reeking of burning cheese any more! I'm going to get a bit more adventurous with mine and try things like drop scones, waffles.
It features a handy cord storage area at the bottom, rubber non-slip feet and can be stored flat or on it's side. I store mine on it's side which takes up much less room and is easy to pick up with the handle in the locked position.
Comes with 1 year guarantee and an instruction booklet with recipes at the back. Widely available.
Advantages: Quick, easy to clean, great sandwiches. Disadvantages: None

INTRO :- The Breville TR40 is a pannini press, NOT a sandwich maker. My point in saying this is to inform the reader that this doesn't have any sandwich shaped cavities as other breville sandwich makers have. As such it allows for other types of bread to be used, i.e. pannini, ciabata etc... It will of course toast sandwiches as well and has space for two large sandwiches in one go. The device is supplied with a manual and simple sandwich recipe ... ...of the press is a Breville logo which is surrounded by a large clear oval shaped plastic piece that houses a green and red light. (more on that later).
FUNCTIONALITY :- Using the large handle (see picture), the top of the sandwich press can be easily lifted up and down. On the right hand side attached to the handle is a slider. The slider allows the user to lock the sandwich press shut, or select a level at which to keep it in place, i.e. to ensure ...

...the past now with the Breville TR40. It consists of a flat, non-stick, bottom hot plate which is where you put your sandwich and a flat, non-stick, top hot plate which is connected to the bottom one with a floating hinge. This means that it automatically adjusts to the thickness of your sandwich, without pressing too hard and squeezing all the filling out. The operation of the Breville TR40 is pretty simple. Plug it in and a red light appears on ... ...that the chrome finish does get a bit hot to the touch. The handle which is used to raise and lower the top hot plate does remain cool however.
I have had my Breville TR40 for just over six months now and it has seen almost daily use. ...

...buy. I've always had a breville sandwich maker as I feel they're very reliable but wanted to try a sandwich press as I like the various paninis etc. you can buy nowadays. At first I had a few mishaps - lowering the top too far and ending up with sandwiches that resembled pancakes more than anything else. This feels so healthy as you don't need to grease the bread. It has an adjustable height control which means you can use virtually any type or thickness ...

But it takes up a lot of space in the kitchen as its a lot bigger than your average sized sanwich toaster. On the plus ...

well my first impression when opening the box "was where on earth are we going to store this" but as it was past my lunchtime no time to ponder the finer points,so straight on with the manual, well written concise and to the point.
What a breeze, plug in and go, no messing around with oil this plate, have it switched on to prime it, take a holiday while waiting etc. So i was now plugged in and ready to go, well nearly, thought wait the 10 minutes ... ...2 minutes the light was green and ready to cook, very impressed as i was waiting now on my bacon in the frying pan. Panini bread in hand, filled with tomato, bacon and cheese I placed my parcel in the press, gave a lovely resounding sizzle and looking at the cooking guidlines of 5 to 8 minutes i thought i would be looking at a cremation not a toasted sandwich, but soon the cheese was melting and the aroma of bacon and tomato wafting through the air. ...
