As a chef myself from a nice country pub serving traditional homemade food im am appalled when i drive home in the afternoons to see the brewers fayre packed out with people, as i found out when i tried it out the other day and as i have a friend who works in the kitchen.

The pub itself is actually rather nicely decorated with wodden beams, log fire, very clean and a very homely feel making you feel nicely relaxed and comfortable. So first imressions great and then the smile on the face of the staff making you feel wanted and again cant fault the drinks i only drink lager but always been rather tasty and always cold. So as i said first impressions great.

I took a look at that menu when i sat down it read well lots of options pies, steaks mixed grill, sausage and mash just to name a few and again as i ordered staff was excellant obviously trained well. I order the mixed grill which was steak, gammon, sausage, chop, chips mushroom, tomatoes and peas a feast after a busy lunch at work. The food came quickly around 13-15 minutes, but when it came this is where my brewers fayre experience went wrong firstly i said i like my steak rare which is was but was stone cold in the centre and kind of icy so it had come out of the freezer, the sausage was crispy and burnt , the chop and gammon where like rubber and even the veg which my partner had tasted watery again presumably because it was frozen. I had enough by this stage and cound not eat anymore and me being to polite and already paying left without saying anything, wish i had of said something now.

After this experience i spoke to my friend about what he does in the kitchen and i cant believe what they dont do in there its unreal there chefs but dont actually cook anything, i read another review earlier and he said the steaks were the only fresh thing on the menu but not even that is true because the steaks were frozen which you lose half the flavour by freezing it. My friend even told me that the veg was bought in cook by some company frozen ready to use out the frezzer it disgraceful that they can get away with it because dont get me wrong you may like the food but its not brewers fayre food its all different companys and they just reheat it.

You may think im just a stuck up chef but i am someone who enjoys food and thinks people should be eating healthy fresh nutritious food not serving up food someone else has done for you and taking all the credit for.

So overall i personally would not eat there but to be fair they have obviously got it right out the front as i said the service was excellant, the decor was good, a place i would go back to if i was only drinking because i like the atmosphere but the food really is a disgrace and i think we deserve better from a major company.
