Brian Friel's work has been widely known in the
United States as well as in Europe. For the Faber
Critical Guide on Brian Friel  Nesta Jones
examines both "Philadelphia "and "Lughnasa " as
well as two other Friel masterworks  "Making
History and Translations " and seeks not only to
elucidate for both students and fans Friel's
poetic language of theater but to place his work
in the larger context of modern drama.  (This
title is part of the "Faber Critical Guides"
series.)

Translations

Advantages: Strong plot
Disadvantages: Too much for it's length

Today I had an AS-Level English Literature, in which I had to write an essay on Brain Friel's "Translations", so I thought since it's still fresh in my mind, I should talk about the author and the book and share this.

The play "Translations" is set in 1833 Ireland in a village called Baile Beg, despite the fact it was written by Friel in 1980. This time gap allows the author to distance himself from the times and ...
...with the continual threat of an oncoming potato blight, which audience will already be aware of, creating dramatic irony.

The play is set in a hedge school, an informal establishment which provides education for adults in Baile Beg. The schoolmaster, Hugh, appears to be the most authoritive figure here despite the fact his son, Manus, appears to be much more intelligent, but the way Friel exaggerates Hugh arrogant ways, by using the ... more

Review of Dancing at Lughnasa - Brian Friel

Join Him

Advantages: funny, compelling, excellent
Disadvantages: totally non-fiction?

I am delighted to have recently completed my A-Level in English Literature. As much as I enjoyed the subject I was rather limited to reading books for pleasure. I was far to involved in the study of ?Emma? (Jane Austen), ?Antony and Cleopatra? (Shakespeare), John Keats and ?Translations? (Brian Friel) to allow myself commitment to reading a book I wanted to read. Very rare is it that I read a book following a newspaper feature, I usually just pick up any book that looks attractive, read the first page and base my judgement on that. However the feature created interest and confusion and resulted in me having to read the article?s subject book. That being ?Join Me? by Danny Wallace. ?Join Me? is a true story, although I suspect that some fictional writing was included, (of which I shall come to later) about the rise of a collective ...
