Bridge. Simply the most absorbing card game ever created, with the possible exception of high-stakes Texas Hold 'em Poker.

Essentially it's a game for 4 people (or multiples thereof, in tournament play) split into two pairs. You sit opposite your partner, and each player gets dealt 13 hands - that is the whole deck gets used every hand.

Learning to play the game involves learning a few simple rules, not much more complex than the rules of, say, Poker or Blackjack (what most people call Blackjack, not what casino's call Blackjack... we call that 21 or Pontoon!). The rules of bidding have to be learnt, but a few games played with an expert helping you, or with everyone playing open hands, soon makes the process seem obvious.

Then, the only step in learning to play Bridge is to play it for 30 years or so, and actually begin to understand the bidding system! It's one thing to be able to play it, as I can, with some degree of competence, but there is a whole spectrum of tactical bidding and the like which lies far beyond my comprehension, for now.

All told, this is a simple game to learn (especially if you've ever played Whist) but a difficult, perhaps even tedious, game to master. Also involves far more skill than luck, as you can attempt to minimise your losses with a bad hand, and also having half the deck on each "team" every hand tends to balance out the luck over just a few hands.

Great op on a game I never managed to master. My question is this. What does the game of bridge have to do with a joystick?( a force feed one at that)....Robin

I didn't realise Bridge was such a hot topic... I wrote that op, checked my e-mail a few minutes later and found 3 alerts about comments! The mind boggles.

I just don't have a clue about it at all! All the best. Angela
