Follow Bridget as she learns what it's like to wake up every day with a man who never wash's up and who never invites you around to his place. Add to that an annoyingly sarcastic and ignorant new boss, A man stealing 'friend', and constant weight worries as well as trying to keep your friends and family together despite your own relationship problems, and you'll see that this is an eventful novel.
*** What I thought About... ***
1) The style of writing.
I've never read the first novel in the series so I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this one. Sadly in the first three or four pages I was extremely tempted to just stop reading because I really didn't like the way the book was written. It had strange words in it that can only really come across properly in films and it was set out like:
' 7:31 a.m. Depending what Eggs Benedict or Florentine actually are.
7:32 a.m. Except do not have any mushrooms or sausages.
7:33 a.m. Or eggs.
7:34 a.m. Or - come to think of it - milk.'
That to me was just boring. I couldn't get into it and I longed for longer paragraphs which didn't really seem to be coming. The only reason I managed to get through those pages was because I had seen the film and could imagine how Renee Zelwegger would say it.
Thankfully it picked up and after those first few pages there weren't many shorter paragraphs and if there were I didn't mind them, in fact they went into the story quite well.
2) The way the novel was set out.
I liked the different sections in the book. It is split into 15 sections and has 422 pages, although reading it you'd think there was much less!
Each section had a name and throughout that paragraph you found out exactly why it was called what it was. I think Helen Fielding did a great job with the headings; they were really clever.
The sections also made it easier to read the novel. I very rarely read a whole novel in one day so it was great that with this one I managed to read up until the next section and it was easy to just shut the book and go back to it later without forgetting where I got up to. Of course you can always use a bookmark but if you don't have one the option of going back to the heading you left at is always available.
I don't think Helen could have set the novel out any better than she did.
3) The story.
I loved how even though I hadn't read the first novel, I still managed to know what was going on. This is only due to the fact that I had seen the movie 'Bridget Jone's Diary' though and I could identify with who the characters were. Also the way the actors talked in the movie influenced how I read the book. I could imagine their accents and how they would say things and react to things through their face expressions. If I hadn't watched the film I'm not entirely sure I'd have understood the novel as well as I did.
I thought once I got past the first three or four pages, that the novel was actually quite funny. The suspense was good too, you couldn't guess what was going to happen next and that's a huge plus factor in my opinion. There's nothing worse sometimes than knowing exactly what is going to happen before it actually does, it takes away the enjoyment.
Once I'd finished the novel it was only then that I realized how great it actually was. I really liked the story as it was captivating and very clever and also very easy to relate to.
4) The characters.
Bridget Jones. I'm sure almost all girls can relate to at least some part of Bridget. She does everyday things and worries about what most girls worry about...her weight. She screws up just like we do and nothing in her life is made out to be 'perfect' like a lot of other authors go for in their novels. Even with her posh accent, Bridget is extremely down to earth and a very warm, easy to love character.
Mark Darcy appears as Bridget's boyfriend and he is a very proper, British man. He seems quite laid back and unable to show much emotion. He does have a funny side though in a strange kind of way. He isn't as easy to relate to as Bridget but he's still easy to warm to.
Shazzer and Jude are two of Bridget's best friends. They are constantly on the phone together and both lead very complicated love lives and are always complaining about men. They are independent and extremely easy to relate to and could well remind you of your own friends and the way they interact with each other is comfortingly familiar.
Tom is Bridget's gay friend and although he isn't really in the novel that much, he is still quite a funny character with the things he says. He again has problems with his love life and is constantly on the phone to Bridget wanting her advice. He does seem a little self involved sometimes but he's still a nice character.
Magda is a 'smug married' or at least that's how Bridget, Shazzer and Jude refer to her. She's married with three young children and she's a typical mother figure and very common. She is friends with Bridget, Shazzer and Jude but she rarely goes out with them due to other commitments at home. I think all single girls can relate to the way Shazzer, Bridget and Jude react to her.
Rebecca is someone Bridget, Shazzer, Jude and Magda have all known for a good few years but they've never actually been invited anywhere with her. She thinks she's better than everybody else and she's a character I loved to hate. She very conniving and she knows how to get what she wants. I think we've all met somebody like Rebecca and so this helps us to relate to Bridget's relationship with her if indeed you can call it that.
Daniel Cleaver. Daniel is Bridget's ex boyfriend and he's a typical 'man' that girls always complain about. He only thinks about himself and he see's women as purely just sexual objects that are there just to pleasure him.
Bridget's mum and dad are always having little difficulties in their marriage. Her mum is always looking for adventure and her dad simply doesn't show his emotions and hides behind an upbeat mask all the time. They are extremely easy to relate to though as they are very down to earth and do common every day things like have family dinners etc.
5) It's enjoyability.
As I mentioned earlier, the first few pages were a little boring but it picked up very quickly after that. The longer paragraphs made it more enjoyable to read and the humour in it was fantastic. The suspense also added to the enjoyability and there were quite a few shocks in there too which shook things up a little.
I was completely hooked by the second paragraph and I found that I felt everything that Bridget was feeling. I felt sorry for her in places and I also laughed with her in parts too. The modern setting was great and the way the characters interacted with each other was really good.
I didn't hold out any expectations for this novel but I am definitely glad I got it now. Although I aren't a singleton I still found it an entertaining read and one I could gladly read again.
6) It's target audience.
I feel this novel was written especially for women of any age (well apart from young teens and below). There are some sexual references in it and it's got some swearing so it definitely isn't suitable for the younger audience and guys will find this way too girly and probably won't be able to understand it lol.
I don't really think it matters if you are single or not, as I mentioned I'm not and I found it really enjoyable.
7) Any bad bits?
I aren't entirely convinced that people who haven't either read the first book in the series or seen the film will really know what is going on. The novel is carrying on from where the first one left off. I haven't read the first one as I mentioned but I would have liked to before I read this one as it's more than likely that the book is a little different to the film. I know with this one the film has been changed slightly compared to the novel because in the previews I've seen, Daniel Cleaver is in it a lot more than he is in the novel.
The language might also be a little hard to understand for you if you haven't seen/read anything about bridget Jone's diary yet. So my advice would be do not buy this if you're new to Bridget Jones.
*** Summary ***
All in all I'd definitely recommend this novel. It's funny, exciting, suspenseful, easy to relate to and an extremely enjoyable read. It's the ultimate girlie book and should be on every woman's bookshelf.
I bought my copy from Asda for just under 4 pounds and I'm sure you can also buy it from online bookshops or sites such as ebay or amazon. For such a good price you can't go wrong.

So here Bridget goes again! Should you expect a whole new book, you might be disappointed slighty, as this is a follow-up on Diary of the same heroine. Actually Bridge, as her friends call her, has never been gone, has she?

Bridget still is the unsure, lacking selfconfidence and self-underestimating 30-something who in a way can't really handle her life in an adult way. The neurotic, hapless Bridget is back for a second instalment of her diary; titled The Edge Of Reason. Last time we saw her, she was happily shacked up with that nice Mr Mark Darcy, having kicked Daniel Cleaver, her womanising boss to the kerb. So what's new?

Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason is written by Helen Fielding and is the sequel to the successful book, and now film, Bridget Jones’s Diary. ***Background***
Olivia Joules is the most recent novel by HelenFielding - most well known for her two books BridgetJones Diary and BridgetJones: The Edge of reason.
HelenFielding originates from Yorkshire, she began her career in television journalism and also newspaper journalism - which perhaps explains the chosen careers of her lead carachters, Bridget and Olivia!!
Apart from the BridgetJones novels, she had previously written another novel called Cause Caleb, however I haven't yet read this, so cannot comment.
The massive success of BridgetJones has perhaps overshadowed this book - Olivia Joules and the overactive imagination. I wasn't aware that this book even existed until my sister passed her scruffy worn and torn copy on to me.

Advantages: quick, easy read Disadvantages: hard to put down
Ever wondered what to do on a Saturday night when the TV is crap? Here's the answer....get a bottle of wine, a box of chocolates and a copy of Olivia Joules by HelenFielding. Switch of your mobile, unplug the house phone and curl up for the evening alone with this novel.
HelenFielding is the author of the fabulous 'BridgetJones' Diary', and 'BridgetJones, the Edge of Reason', both of which have been made into fabulous movies, of which I am a great fan.
After reading the other two novels, I had high expectations of this book. HelenFielding has a glorious writing style that flows easily and draws you into the book. This one is no different. After a few pages I was totally hooked and couldn't put the book down.

some pretty dire situations throughout the book, it doesn?t take a rocket scientist to work out how it finishes up. Plus the fact she?s blonde and skinny and irresistible to men ? well that always helps.
