We first bought my sons part of this train set when the eldest was 2. At the time, they were expensive, but although we liked the look of them, we had no idea how durable or loved they would be! I had 3 sons in the end, now aged 18,17 and 13 and they all loved the Brio stuff - we had a fairly big outfit in the finish, as we added to the collection every birthday, Xmas and hospital visit type thing. Our collection was used every single day and has now been passed on to my step grandchildren. When I first bought it, it was quite hard to get hold of and there was only Brio to buy. Since buying items for the grandsons, I would also recommend the Tesco and Early learning ranges which are compatible and sturdy. I think the reason it is so popular is because children still have to use their imagination to play with the sets although the mechanics of it can be quite intricate. It's also exciting for the kids, as once you have a fair collection, you can build a different layout to surprose them each morning. My lads used to put currants in the trucks to represent coal, like they carried in the Thomas stories. All in all, this is a definite investment toy which gives great value and play potential - worth buying, even if only small amounts at a time.

I used to love this stuff. One of my earlist memories was seeing a bridge for it in a shop in France.
