Healthy living made easy! We all know that we are supposed to drink more water than we should, but tap water doesn’t taste nice and bottled water gets expensive… The answer for me is a counter top water chiller that uses a Brita Maxtra Water filter. This costs me about 5p per litre for filtered, chilled fresh tasting water. The water tastes great, the filter removes limescale, chlorine (which smells and tastes bad) aluminium and certain heavy metals (like copper and lead) along with certain pesticides. Organic impurities are also reduced.
*Assembly: This is straightforward. Simply take the unit out of the box and remove the polystyrene packaging. Wash the clear plastic lid, upper and filtered water tanks in warm soapy water, rinse and dry thoroughly. You then need to reassemble the tanks as they came out of the packaging. Put the water filter chiller on a stable flat surface, close to a mains power socket, not in direct sunlight and out of any young children’s reach. It must be at least 15cm away from a wall to allow the chiller to work effectively
*Before drinking the water: Again this is easy… Lift the hinged lid and, using a suitable jug, pour 2 litres of clean water into the tank. While pouring the water, place a glass under the dispenser and push the lever back to drain the water – it is handy to have a helper here! By keeping the lever pressed you allow the air in the internal tank to be replaced with water. This means that when the unit is first used water will flow and no air blocks can develop. It can take a few minutes for the water to flow through. Put a glass under the dispenser, push the lever back and drain the water. Repeat this process so that you have completely flushed the system twice.
*The Filter: Remove the filter cartridge from its plastic wrapping (the filter cartridge often appears moist during storage - this is simply condensation). Fully immerse the filter cartridge in cold water and agitate gently side to side to remove any air bubbles. You don’t need to pre-soak these filter cartridges before use. Remove the lid from the upper water tank. Insert the filter cartridge into the upper water tank as shown below. Push it firmly into place. When correctly fitted, the cartridge should remain in place when the tank is turned upside-down. Place the upper water tank over a suitable bowl and fill it to the maximum fill level. Allow the water to filter through and discard the first two filterings…
*Using the chiller: After the first two filterings place the upper water tank back onto the chiller. To use the Memo function you then need to press and hold the START button on the Memo on the lid until all of the bars on the display appear and flash twice. The Memo bars will disappear at the rate of one a week so that you know when it is time to replace the filter. When it is time to replace the cartridge after 4 weeks use, simply lift the ring pull handle on top of the cartridge to remove. You then need to repeat the initial set up process and clean the unit, prepare the filter etc… The cartridge may be disposed of in household waste or contact the BRITA-Care customer service for advise on recycling schemes.
