UPDATE AT THE BOTTOM: Water. Swimming in it, walking in the rain, drinking it, whatever. But, living in a hard water area as I do I am not a fan of the stuff that comes out of my tap.
For several months I had been buying bottled water from my supermarket when I did my weekly shop. Then one morning as I stumbled to the front door step to get my morning pinta I noticed that my milkman had left me a leaflet advertising Brita water filters.
As I woke up with my first cuppa of the day I perused the leaflet. Hmm, I wondered would it really “make water taste better” or was it just a gimmick? Now those of you who know me well know that I love to try out new things so it didn’t really take me all that long (before I had finished my first of many cups of tea!) to tick the “Yes please, deliver me a Brita water filter” box!!
Three days later I was like a kid at Christmas tearing into my new delivery! It came complete with a replacement filter cartridge and idiot proof instructions as to how to set it all up. this was several Summers ago now and it was well used for the first few months. Even my sons liked the taste of the water from it! I was shocked by this as this is what usually happened:
Son: “Mum, I’m thirsty” Mum :Are you, well have a drink then?” Son: “What have we got to drink?” Mum: “Water.” Son: “Euch , I hate water.” Mum: “Well you can’t be that thirsty then, can you?”
The novelty did wear off after a few months for the boys, not so for me. I still use it regularly. Yes, the water does taste better after having gone thru the filter system. Probably not as nice as some of the bottled stuff, but miles better than the “metallicky” stuff I was getting from my tap.
The replacement cartridges can be purchased anywhere the jugs are sold. I get mine from my milkman once a month. Brita suggest you change the cartridge at these intervals. The jug comes with a handy little date selector that you adjust to remind you when to change the cartridge, if indeed you remember to do this! I don’t..as a result I have a kitchen drawer full of replacement cartridges, Oh at least 8 months worth!
In conclusion, I am pleased with my Brita and am glad that I bought it, I just need to remember to change the filter a little bit more often!
UPDATE: Well several changes have occured since April when I first wrote this op, the first one being that I have dispensed with my milkman's services. It wasn't a decision I took lightly, I am all in favour of keeping the doorstep delivery but.....they have got to learn to be more competitive pricewise if they are truly going to survive. I get 4 pints of milk at Tescos at the price that I was getting only about 2 and a half from milkie:o(
I still have at least 10 spare water cartridges, and I still forget to replace them as required!
My waterfilter, who henceforth shall be known as Fred, has a girlfriend! After several months of standing alone in my kitchen he discovered the delights of Bluey, my new cordless jug kettle. Fred likes nothing more than cooling her sizzling element down on a daily basis! I can see that I shall have to keep a close eye on these two, what with them and Daisy the toastiemaker, who has been spotted making 'cow-eyes' at Mike from across the kitchen..What do you mean who is Mike? My microwave of course!!
Ok ok....I'm going!!! Byeeeeee Kaz xx

You MUST change your water filter cartridge every month (or 150 litres, whichever is soonest). Not only have the active ingredients stopped working, but you have to change the cartridges regularly for hygiene reasons. Think about it - you're taking the chlorine out of your tapwater, because you don't like the taste, so what's keeping your water fresh and germ free? Nothing! You should also empty out unused water after 24 hours and make sure the cartridge is always in contact with water - don't let the jug run empty or low. Incidentally, the reason you probably haven't even noticed your filter stopped working months ago is because if you leave a jug of water exposed to the air for a few hours, the chlorine evaporates off naturally so you won't smell or taste it when drinking.
