When we were getting married back in June a friend asked me what we would like for a present and I confessed that for some time I had secretly desired a water filter. I have always drunk tap water, in the belief that it is good for me, but a little while before there had been a burst water main near our house. Our water supply wasn't cut off, but for several days afterwards the water coming out of the taps was noticeably cloudy and "scummy" and it made me wonder exactly what I was consuming. I couldn't bring myself to drink tap water for some time.
ARE YOU GETTING ENOUGH? Water makes up more than two thirds of the weight of the human body, and without it, we would die in a few days. Ideally we should each drink six or seven glasses of water each day, and increase this amount on hot days or when exercising. Water is lost through urine and sweat. It is easy to become dehydrated without even realising it. Other factors which contribute to this include not drinking enough water, having too much caffeine and spending a long time in air conditioned buildings. Dehydration can cause headaches, tiredness, digestive problems and dry skin. Chronic dehydration can contribute to more major problems such as constipation and kidney stones.
THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF DRINKING WATER Although it contains no nutrients, water is a vital part of our diet. It is also a powerful cleanser as many toxins are flushed from our bodies in urine. This also makes skin look clearer and smoother.
Water helps to regulate body temperature as we sweat.
Water forms the fluid which surrounds our joints and helps to regulate the metabolism.
Water helps to alleviate constipation by moving food through the intestinal tract - what would you rather have? A colonic irrigation, or drink lots of water?
Drinking water can also help with weight loss. Having a glass of water 20 minutes before makes you feel full more quickly once you start eating a meal. However, you shouldn't drink water while eating as it waters down your stomach acid and could cause digestive problems.
Drinking several glasses of water each day can help prevent health problems such as headaches, bladder, kidney and bowel problems, including cancers.
Mental performance deteriorates by 10% when we are thirsty.
THE WATER FILTER The jug itself is 10" high, 7" across the body (10 ½" from handle to spout) and about 3 1/2" wide. It's made from white and clear plastic, but feels very sturdy. The jug holds 1.25 litres of water and has a flip top lid for filling from the tap.
The cartridge fits easily into the funnel and needs to be pushed into place until it clicks.
The top of the jug is then filled with tap water which gradually runs into the chamber at the bottom. The first two fillings are used to flush the cartridge and should be discarded. On the third filling the water is ready to drink. There is no need to keep the cartridge immersed in the water. The cartridge has a four step filtration which removes chlorine, lime scale and other impurities. The new Maxtra cartridges which fit this jug do not require any presoaking.
On the lid of the jug is an electronic "memo" which tells you when the cartridge needs to be changed. This is easy to set by holding down the start button until all four bars have appeared on the display. Each week, one bar will disappear and at the end of the fourth week the cartridge needs replacing. The cartridges are recyclable and can be returned to Brita in Oxfordshire. I think this is a good idea, but I can't really comment on this as they ask for them to be sent six at a time, and we haven't yet used that many.
The jug should be washed in warm soapy water every time the filter is changed, but apart from the lid (because of the electronic memo) the jug is safe to put in the dishwasher.
The jug should be kept out of direct sunlight, and away from heat sources. Once filtered the water should be used with two days.

PRICE I believe this retails for about £18.99. Cartridges are widely available in a pack of three for around £9.99, unless you are lucky enough to find them on a deal in Tescos (as we did) or elsewhere.
IN CONCLUSION I've used this jug every day since we got it. During the spell of very hot weather I even got the rest of the family drinking water! Does it make the water taste different? I'm afraid, to me it just tastes like… water! It doesn't taste particularly like bottled water, but even though the filters are a bit on the pricey side, you get an awful lot more water from one filter than you would spending £3 a month on the bottled variety. I think the biggest obvious difference between unfiltered and filtered tap water is that when you pour this into a clean glass the water is unbelievably clear, there isn't a single "bit" floating in it.
Before we got this I personally used to drink at least one (sometimes two) 2 litre bottles of diet Coke every week. Now I just don't buy Coke anymore and my preferred drink is water. Someone told me that the more you drink water, the more you get to like it and I have found this to be true. Now I usually have a cup of coffee in the morning, but unless I have to put the kettle on for someone else, all I drink is water.
Do I feel healthier? Well, certainly I can feel more self righteous having cut out all that caffeine! The one benefit I have noticed, is that the patches of dry flaky skin I used to have on my forehead (despite moisturising twice a day) have completely disappeared. It had never occurred to me before that this was happening because I wasn't drinking enough.
The jug is designed to fit in the fridge, but as it's quite big, when you put it in the door there's just enough room to fit a 4 pint carton of milk. If you want orange juice too, you'll need to lay it down on one of the shelves and hope it doesn't leak. My personal preference is for my water to be room temperature, rather than icy cold. During the hot weather I filtered the water and then put some in a smaller jug in the fridge for anyone who wanted it cold.
Advantages: Makes tap water taste great, removes impurities Disadvantages: Initial outlay and too big to fit into most fridges
...thing I noticed is that Brita have changed the filter cartridge from the cylindrical type that I used before. You get one cartridge supplied with the filter jug wrapped in foil for protection. The cartridge is now called Maxtra and looks like a little white plastic pot with a sealed lid on it with slits.
It boasts a 4 step filtration system that sounds pretty damn impressive. Firstly, the water flows through a fine mesh filter - what that does in ... ...you can return it to Brita within 30 days for a full refund.
For those of us interested in re-cycling, the cartridge is 100% re-cyclable and can be sent Freepost in packs of six to Brita, address is given in the manual.
The acid test - does it work?
In my humble opinion, absolutely!! The chlorine smell and odd taste is completely gone and I can drink it on its own quite easily and find it refreshing. Body de-tox here I come.

Advantages: Clean fresh tasting water at minimum cost Disadvantages: Having to run water through twice with each new cartridge
When my son was about 10 months old I decided to buy a water filter jug as I was fed up of boiling tap water for him to drink but just felt he was too precious to drink it straight from the tap. I had a look around and was slightly overwhelmed by the choice so decided to get this one from Argos as they had a special offer on and the jug and 6 refill cartridges were both half price, making it about £20 for the lot. The jug is elegant and contemporary ... ...water cool leaving space for a 2pint and a 1pint bottle of milk. The jug holds 1.4 litres of filtered water, or if you remove the filtration system it will hold 2.4 litres of liquid. There is a flip top hole in the lid which you just pour the water through from the tap without having to remove the lid and there is also a flip-top on the spout to stop any nasties falling in your lovely clean, filtered water. Its best to wait for the water to filter ...

Review of Brita Marella Cool Water Filter
Advantages: Cheap, great colour range, easy to change filter Disadvantages: lid isn't held on only by a small click, comes off easy if knocked
...components. I found this Brita one, with very easy plug in filters. Works great, no strange taste, and it filters the water reasonably quickly. Capacity is good, and the colours these come in are very nice. We got a red (passion) coloured one, which is rather tasty for a kitchen appliance I guess. You have to change the filters on these every month, go to ebay to buy a pack of 12 or so to get a decent price on these. Watch out for the lid if you've ... ...pour a glass of water - the water can burst from the top as it's only held on by a click and gravity. Otherwise super, though there's some sort of effort on the top that's supposed to indicate when you have to change the filter. It's pants, I don't even think it works. Nor do I care. ...

Advantages: Fits well into the fridge; carrtridges are common, electronic timer Disadvantages: None
This product has saved me a bunch of cash! Cold filtered water from as little as 6p per liter! oh yes!
I cant stand the taste of the London tap water and spent years and hundreds of pounds buying bottled water until I purchased this water filter
The filter filters the water surprisingly quickly and a few minutes after filling it up you are ready to enjoy your refreshing filtered water
The water tastes great and the filter fits snugly in the door ... ...for?
Oh yes it also has a little electronic timer on the top of the lid to let you know when to change the filter
If you are currently buying bottled water I recommend you upgrade to a water filter and save yourself a bunch of effort, cash and the environment
The jug will hold 2.4l of water of which 1.4l of it will be filtered (with the rest holding above the filter line - ready to be filtered)
Each Maxtra cartridge is designed to last a month ...

Advantages: Easy to use, cheap Disadvantages: None!
I thought a water filter would be too much hassle, so I used to buy bottled water, then I had a think about what effect this was having on the environment (not to mention the number of trips to the dump!) and decided to buy a water filter.
When I bought the Marella I was just looking for a basic model at a good price, and I got that and more.
The jug and cartridge are easy to use and its all pretty self explanatory, but I really like the digital ...
