I live in quite a hard water area and find that the water is only drinkable using the filter. The taste of the water is vastly improved, mainly because the filters take out all or most of the limescale. They last for about a month before needing replacing, and can be a bit of a pain to change, as you need to run water through several times before you can drink the water. Also the filter cartridges are quite expensive, costing around £12 for a box of three filter cartridges. I have found that they aren't always readily available in my area, though they are getting easy to find in places like Tesco and some department stores. Generally, I think that they are worth the money paid just for the nice drinking water.
