I bought a Britax Eclipse seat for my daughter when she was about 9 1/2 months and had reached the all important weight of 9kg to move into a forward facing seat. She is still using this seat and is now 2 1/2 years old.
First important safety fact of this opinion, for this seat your child must weigh 9-18kg/20-40lb (approx. 9 months - 4 years)
When it comes to safety theres no messing with me I want a well known manufacturer thats tried, tested and trusted, with Britax you get that. Although the factors that influenced my buying at the time were known safety record, an ability to fit most makes and models of cars as the seat needed to be transferable between my car, hubby's ever changing company car and Grandma's car. I was also swayed by the limited edition spooty dalmation fabric cover that can be removed and washed by hand.
If you are going to wash the cover it is best done in the summer, not like me who did it in the winter and was without a car seat for 2 days as the cover dried, as the cover is handwash or a gentle machine wash only and cannot be dried on a radiator or in a tumble dryer. I do have to add that after considerable toddler abuse the cover washed up fantastically but it is a bit fidly to remove and replace, a second pair of hands is recommended.
Cost wise these seats are on sale for approximately £90 but we did pay £109 for ours but before you all die of shock it was a limited edition and we bought it from local shop who took the time to make sure both myself and hubby knew how to fit it properly etc etc.
Safety tip number 2, Always make sure the seat is fitted correctly. Consult the user guide, and when purchasing this item ideally you should be shown how to fit this car seat.
The safety features of this seat are as follows: • Chest and buckle pads • Lock-off device to maintain seat belt tension • 5 point 1 pull integral harness Extra features include: • 5 adjustable seat positions • Seat reclines without disturbing your child • Can be fitted in the centre of the rear seat using a lap belt
So far this seat has been used in a Peugot 405, Renault Scenic, Renault Clio, Ford Focus and Lexus 200 and it has fit snuggly in all of them although initially father-in-law wasn't sure about having it on the leather seats of his Lexus. I added this about the cars as at the time of purchase we were advised that not all car seats are suitable for all cars so please do check this out when buying any car seat. Any reputable stockist will be only too happy to help.

Good points raised about washing covers! Glad you had a local shop who spent time making sure you could fit it properly! Your's child's life is so precious!

i have a problem with Milly as she cant fit into her 'first stage car seat'. She is too big :-o . I also have a Britax ( i think the old version but same model as this one ) but it is well worn and the fabric on the seating area is threadbare now and hasn't lasted both kids (before Milly). So i am thinking of buying the Argos cheap one £36 ish from birth (i believe). They all have to adhere to safety standards and to be honest the argos one looks remarkably similar to my britax. I will then be handing old faithful over to mumsy for in her car.

We have one of these for Reuben ... I have to admit though that I did put him front facing before he reached 20lbs ... may boys are very light and if weight was something I always went on my eldest would have been nearly 2 before being able to sit forward facing ... and would have to travel with his legs totally crunched up against the back of the seat. Talked it through with Britax, Mothercare and a few other companies and none of them had a perfect solution! Still .. they are both big enough now so no probs :) Jo
