"Use only because there is no alternative"

Having read the other reviews I can only conclude they were written by Brittany Ferries staff members. I regularly use the Portsmouth/St Marlo ferry and every time I find their service terrible, frustrating and annoying. Why do I continue to use them, simply, and unfortunately their is no alternative. So what's wrong :-
Expensive : My last crossing Dec 2007 ( two people a van and two dogs) cost £436 . This was the cheapest option , no cabin on the night crossing out, just a "comfortable" ( see below) reclining seat (£5 each) and the dogs stayed in the van (but were still charged £100). Unlike airlines this included absolutely no free extras , no drinks, no snack,no paper , no magazine.
Departure: Because of the dogs we were required to check in 90min. before departure. Check in took 5min at the kiosk, then 20min. waiting in the van in the cold in the first parking area then moved on to second parking area to wait for a further hour in the cold. No terminal facilities other than a public toilet.. Loading then commenced seemingly one car at a time ( the Dover ferries can do it quickly but not Brittany Ferries)
On Board: You head for your reclining seats. You can spot first time users as they usually have to ask where they are, signposting leaves a lot to be desired. The seats are described in the brochure as "comfortable" but almost everyone (and I'm not exaggerating) ends up sleeping on the floor which is more comfortable. The crossing takes a seemingly endless 10hours night time or 8 hours day time. On an aircraft there would be a least headphones on the seats and an in fight movie, lots now have video displays on every seat. Brittany Ferries has zilch, nothing, not even background musac. A previous review said "so much to do" there is actually a restaurant , bar and two small shops and a tiny cinema (pay extra) showing one film.
Conclusion: If you want to visit lovely Brittany and take a vehicle The Portsmouth St Malo crossing is very direct and saves a lot of driving. For that reason, and that reason only you may choose to travel by Brittany Ferries. Be prepared to put up with the service and join we regulars in wishing there was an alternative.
