I bought this Brother multifunction printer/scanner/copier following a tesco e-mail offer. My previous HP printer was starting to get really annoying with constant paperjams and such, so Tesco's offer of the Brother printer for less than £50 was well received.
The Brother DCP-110C is an early model and has been replaced in Tesco by subsequent models that are basically the same. The offer at Tesco was probably due to Brother clearing out their older models and to generate some interest in the consumer market as they are making efforts to establish themselves in the private consumer market.
The printer features a Scanner, printer, copier and ports for a variety of digital camera memory cards. The ports for the memory cards was a great addition for myself as I am forever losing the cable to connect the camera to the PC, not to mention the batteries always running out. I also had an old camera that I had broken the battery compartment and it didn't have a port for a mains cable. So buying the printer has allowed me to get the pictures off the memory card.
The quality of the printing is very good and slightly better than my old HP printer. I have used Tesco's general purpose photo paper with the printer and the pictures I have are better than with the HP and their own expensive photo paper. This has made it much cheaper to print out tonnes of baby pictures, which with an 8 month old is quite a saving.
My only gripe with the printer has been finding the ink cartridges, Tesco did not stock them when I first bought the printer and the only local store I could get them in was Staples and they cost about £40 for a full set of four. I did complain to Tesco that I had bought a printer from them and could not get the ink from them. Since then, they have started to stock the ink in my local store. The full set costs about £30, which with clubcard points and not having to make a special trip is much easier.
I have bought some from online shops and they can be as low as £15 or £20 for the four. However, one set I purchased ran out very quickly. The yellow cartridge ran out after only two days and I had only printed a dozen or so pictures. The Brother set purchased from Tesco is still going after three weeks, so has worked out cheaper.
Further to my own purchase, my mum has purchased a subsequent Brother printer model again from Tesco's e-mail offers. She had received a load of baby pictures over Christmas and been impressed. She has had a few problems with this one, and is currently on her third one. The first one was delivered with a smashed glass plate in the scanner. This was returned to Tesco with no problems, except they seem to have lost it after it was collected. The second one had a broken component inside the machine and didn't work properly. The third one has just arrived, so will have to wait and see how it does.
If you have a technical problem with the printer, Brother are very helpful. Before you call them, you can reset the machine by disconnecting the power plug and whilst holding down the menu button, reconnect the power plug. hold the menu button down until you get the select language message. Take a note of the error number and then call Brother, this will cut down on the time you have to spend on the phone to Brother.
In conclusion, I would recommend this printer to anyone. In fact, I have suggest that my boss gets one for the office. The problem with the cartridges does seem to be the fault of the cartridge and not the printer. Plus the help my mum has had from Brother so far does suggest that any problems are dealt with very professionally and quickly.
I liked this review. It rolled nicely and had most of the info I wanted without being "techy" and confusing. Glad you was able to add info about replacement cartridges - Very helpul, which is how I rated the piece. Nicely written with a personal touch. Not enough info or quality for an "E" on this one, but might have the basis for an exceptional review with a little bit of tweaking - Feel free to hit my GB if you do and I'll happily re-read with a view to upping my rating. :-)
