Advantages: Lots of features (postscript, network, easy to use) for the money Disadvantages: Sometimes tricky to kill print jobs (maybe more a Windows issue)
This is simpy the best value for money network printer out now for small/home offices.
Setup of the printer was relatively simple, only downpoint is main documentation is on CD. A quicksetup poster is provided though. But it's nice to keep a manual by the printer for quick reference, rather than having to find and load the CD. But you could always print out the manual now!
The driver is fairly good, although the need for two seperate drivers on ... ...1 for Postscript. Yes, this printer does Postscript too!! The driver also allows multipage printing or poster printing.
Network control of the printer is simple via a web interface, or a control panel in Windows. But the ability to kill jobs is lacking, often requiring hard reset when needed.
The printer is fast, data transfer over 10mbps network is great, but 100mb is supported too. Warmup from sleep takes about half a minute and individual pages ...

...my previous review of the Brother HL-1450, you probably thought that Brother couldn't make a worse printer, but somehow they have managed it with the HL-1270N. Where I rated the HL-1450 as a dog, the HL-1270N is a pure bred mongrel.
In appearance, the HL-1450 is almost exactly the same as any of Brother's range of desktop laser printers. The top of the unit is taken up by the output paper tray and a blue plastic "plate" proudly declaring the printer ... ...terms of print quality the Brother is nothing special; this is a budget mono laser printer and is really designed for little more than printing letters. Graphics are reasonable quality, just bear in mind that you'll only have grayscale images to play with. Toner is relatively cheap and seems to last a good length of time. At my place of employment we generally find that a toner cartridge lasts between eight and ten weeks which is pretty good.

The HL-1270N is a complete, network-ready business printer for small workgroups who need many of the features found in more expensive printers. The HL-1270N comes network ready, right out of the box, with 10/100 Base TX Ethernet ... just turn the printer on, connect the network, configure the printer, and you are ready to print anywhere on the network.
