Compared to newer laser printers the Brother HL 1430 looks boring and is also quite bulky. However what it lacks in looks it certainly makes up for in quality and reliability.

The print resolution for this printer is 600 dpi x 600 dpi. This is good enough quality for everything I print including graphs, charts, word documents and black and white images without a great amount of detail.

I have had this printer for over 2 years now and have had no problems with it since the day of purchase. I use my printer to mainly print out word documents, emails and work for university.

--Laser Vs Inkjet-- I had two inkjet printers before purchasing my first laser printer. For the sort of documents I print I find a laser printer much faster, more reliable and also of a higher quality. Over the last 2 years this printer has proven to be cheaper than my other injet printers as the ink cartridges dried out and were expensive to replace. Since I have had this printer I have still not replaced the toner it came with.
--Quality-- The print resolution for this printer is 600 dpi x 600 dpi. This is good enough quality for everything I print including graphs, charts, word documents and black and white images without a great amount of detail.
--Ease of use-- The printer comes with a instalation CD with the drivers and other software included. Once installed the printer is really easy to use. It also has a light on the front letting you know if the toner is low, when a document is pending and also when it is ready to print. The paper tray can hold up to 250 A4 sheets of paper and can print at a max speed of 14ppm.
--Connectivity-- The printer can connect to a desktop computer or laptop through either a parallel or usb cable. The printer does not come with these cables so I used the old parallel cable from my old inkjet printer. You can also buy a usb cable seperatly for around £5.
--Cost-- I paid around £80 for the printer in 2006 and you can expect to pay about £40 for a replacement TN6300 toner.
Overall I am very pleased with this printer as it prints to a high quality and is hassle free!
Advantages: Reliable, good quality, cheap to run Disadvantages: Memory capacity, copy handling
...printer comes with a standard Brother cartridge of 3000 prints which takes a while to use up if using as a personal printer. The replacement cartridges are not that cheap if you buy the OEM product, but the 6000 print version is naturally better value. In fact the only other difference between the two available cartridges is in the amount of toner.
For some reason best known to themselves, about 1/3 of the toner capacity is unusable when the cartridge ... ...to use up the rest. However, I found an Internet site offering a bottle of refill toner (6000 prints) for £15 which has worked perfectly ever since, so you are not duty bound to throw away the cartridge and pay their replacement prices. With an easily accessible plug, it was also very easy to accomplish the refilling.
The main drawbacks in the printer are the relatively small memory (4MB) and the handling of multiple copies. Instead of printing ...

Advantages: CHEAP ALTERNATIVE TO INKJET Disadvantages: THERE ARE FASTER LASER PRINTERS OUT THERE
Im on my second brother printer now and I really can't fault them!!! Having attached it with the supplied USB cable, Windows XP immediately recognised this and was able to use it immediately!
Personally I only use it for documents, envelopes and labels but then what else is there. It is very reliable, cheap to buy and quite versatile.
Graphics wise you may come unstuck as it only has 4 MB of memory on board but then as long as you don't want picture ...
