This is a nice toy. Entirly functional admitedly but its good at what it does. Its one of those items that just works flawlessly. You know when you want something to do its job when its told to and sit quietly in the corner for the rest of the time. (Unlike windows) this printer does it.
It is described as a Compact personal printer and it definatley is. In my house it is networked (via a print server, while you can get the 2040N its double the price I paid) and has never had any issues with the high workload of 6 final year degree students using it as their main printing source.
When printing text it is at its best but also does a good job on images of any sort, sadley as with all lasers an particularly dark images don't come out very well. (but atleast you don't get saturated paper, unlike inkjets)
As it has a 96Mhz processor it also has no problem with large jobs or high sized images with which some lasers have suffered at the hands of in the past.
Also Brother claim their toner cartridges can do 1,500 sheets, I think they are wrong. I've gotten through 1.5boxes of paper (3700ish sheets) on the free toner that came with it.
Its basic specs are;
Max. Print Speed - 20pages per minute
Max. Print Resolution - 2400x600dpi
Interface - Parallel or USB
Memory - 8MB
And a little single sheet feeder which I have never used, but it looks like it works.
This is a great product for small offices or homes and will cope very well with all print jobs sent to it. To be honest it just doesn't muck about. Its also very quiet and has a sleep mode for when its not in use which makes it silent and light free.
One thing I should say about laser printers is that the toner is carsenogenic. Meaning that it can give you cancer. However only in very high doses. It would be wise not to have this or any laser printer on your desk especially if your going to use it alot. Its good to have them in well ventilated large rooms preferably without people too close to it all the time.
Which reminds me theres a coursework deadline in a few days - im off to fill up the printer with paper.
