I had a Brother HL-1240 printer for a number of years and it gave great service but a couple of months ago it finally died. A sad day but something bad was bound to happen soon. So on to the replacement. I needed a Laser Mono Printer, simple, and was looking for one which printed at a decent speed and more importantly had cheap consumables.
Having compared the four machines it seemed the Lexmark E232 was the one to go for but I had yet to look at the consumables of the printers. The HP had the cheapest of the toner cartridges at £36 but it’s yield was only 2,500 pages, next up was the Brother at £44 for an impressive 6,700 pages, then came the Lexmark for £45 but for only 2,500 pages and last but not least Epsom at £65 for 6,000 pages. As I am a very high user of my laser printer (I use it for business as well as home use) consumables must be factored into the price of the machine when buying. This left me with no choice but the Brother whose excellent yield per toner cartridge would cost me less in the long run. Having already owned a Brother printer I was not disappointed with this decision as it was modelled on the old Brother HL –1240 and looked similar in appearance and the way it worked.
The printer came on time and was easy to assemble, slotting the toner into the drum and opening the front panel to load the drum and toner into the printer, don’t be afraid to use a little force to do this! Installation was a doddle, first insert the cd-rom and follow the instructions on screen, simple as. If that doesn’t work for you the instruction manual is clear and precise in it’s instructions, you’ll not find a better one around. After this connect the printer via USB or parallel port to the computer and you will be away. The printer is quite bulky at 38.2 cm (w) x 38.3 cm (d) x 25.2 cm (h) and is almost like a big block! It’s colour is beige the perennial colour for all office equipment!!
Next to the acid test what was the print quality and speed like. My first document came out as clean as a whistle, clear black text against the sheer white of the paper, impressive indeed. Speed wise I was a little disappointed. As usual it takes about 10 seconds to get the first page out but the advertised 17 ppm was a little ambitious and it was more like 15 maybe 16 ppm. It had passed it’s initial tests and now for some bulk work! I needed to print out some flyers for work, around 900 pages. This should test the machine out good and proper. I used two different types of paper too 80gsm and 100gsm. The Brother HL 1530 performed admirably only twice did it pick up a couple of pages in one go and I got a print on two different pages. This was probably due to the paper being a little stuck together rather than the printers fault, a good tip is to flap the paper about before inserting it into the paper trap to get some air between each sheet. Every sheet was of a high quality and still after these two months I’m still using the original toner cartridge that came with the printer.
Of course, this is not all the printer can do, it has an individual sheet feeder at the front which you can pull down or have up and keep the block shape which looks quite tidy. It will take a variety of papers, envelopes, transparencies, labels, plain paper, bond paper and recycled paper. It has a sleep mode like many machines today to conserve energy but quickly wakes up to print documents, there is a ‘Go’ button on the machine to wake it up if you know you are going to print something soon and the machine is asleep. All in all a very good printer and one I would recommend if you need a mono laser printer for copious amounts of printing.
Time will tell whether this will go on to be as good or even better than my last Brother laser printer but initial signs are good and I hope they continue.

Sounds great! We've got one of those really chunky multi-function machines, which don't get me wrong is good, but I'd much prefer something like this! Leila :)
