After a long drought of shooters on Nintendo's DS system, Brothers In Arms finally takes the stand. Brothers in arms DS Follows the typical style of the console games whereby you are the member of the squad, and must complete various missions, from infiltrating enemy lines to ploughing tanks through the frontline.

The one main change is the lack of a command-style interface. Instead of the usual BiA interface which sees you commanding other members and telling them where to go and what to do, that is now done Automatically by the AI, leaving you with just yourself to worry about.

Visually the game is superb. Some of the best, realistic graphics on DS, full 3D and a constant frame rate. it truly is a grand experience. The general terrain can suffer from looking a little pixellated but on the whole, it looks exceptional, it really pushes the DS in terms of hardware. the characters are well animated, and special effects have a very satisfying feel.

Sound-wise, again the game is very good. Although some sounds are a little 'compressed', there is a decent Voice over, and gunfire, explosions etc sound pretty convincing. Either way, it's difficult to complain with getting such as cinematic on the handheld.

The game itself plays very well. All the action is on the top screen in a classic BiA third person view. The bottom screen has you moving the stylus accross the screen, which in turn moves your crosshair around the top screen. This works very well and completely fluent, making aiming fairly precise and easy.
The touch screen is also used for changing weapons, by simply tapping on the icon of the gun you're using, it opens a simple drop-down menu, with all the wapons you are carrrying, simply tapping one selects it.
Reloading is also done with the touch screen. there is a small icon of an ammo clip, simply tap it and drag down, and your character will pull out the empty clip, and reload the weapon with another magazine. The ammo status is show on the top screen in the bottom corner. Each weapon has an unlimited amount of magazines, and the ammo in each matches the respective guns in real-life. Certain weapons such as rocket launchers have a limited amount of ammo.
Also performed on the touch screen, fairly intuitively, is throwing grenades. Simply hold down the stylus on the grenade icon, located in the lower right of the touch screen, and drag up and down to increase and decrease the power respectively, using the D-Pad (or ABXY buttons if left-handed) allows you to change the direction of the greande arc. Simply release the stylus to throw the grenade.

Movement is simply controlled by the D-PAD, and left handed people can use the A,B,X and Y buttons instead, firing is down with either the left trigger (L) or right trigger (R), again depending on whether in right or left handed mode.

Game modes are pretty limited, but good nonetheless. Single player sees you play out three different camapigns. the missions will see you play on foot, in a jeep and in a tank, which is particularly fun. The missions take on average about 10 minutes, earlier ones can be completed in about 5, later ones in 15 or so. So there's enough to keep you going a while, especially as there are three difficulty levels on each one, unfortunately though there is only a faily minicule 13 missions.

it has a multiplayer mode, whereby 4 people, who own the game can go head to head with eachother, the game plays much the same as the snigle player mode, only in a more deathmatch style. Very fun but gets fairly repetitve after a while.

the developers have also throw in a few extras such as interviews and the like, but in all honesty, the games downfall, is it's shortness, and i feel that more content would've been a better option than developer interviews. At least after having completed the game on the first difficulty you unlock a couple of extra 'more powerful' guns.

Bottom line, it's a top game, and offers an excellent experience, unlike anything seen on DS before, but it is a fairly limited game and won't keep you going for very long. Definately worth buying, especially fans of war games and/or shooters. but expect to be trading it in fairly soon.
