Review #26 on Budweiser lager - WHY?
Because, as Anheuser-Busch would probably agree, quantity far outweighs quality.
Glancing through my well thumbed copy of Michael Jackson's 500 Classic Brews for some relevant information on this beer, I find - nothing. So it doesn't make it into the top 500, what a surprise.

* ANHEUSER-BUSCH *
This is without doubt the big daddy of American brewers with almost 50% of the market, nearly double that of its closest rival, Miller. Its flagship brand, Budweiser, is the top-selling beer in the world. Anheuser-Busch began life in 1860 when German immigrant Eberhard Anheuser bought a brewery in St Louis and his son-in-law, Adolphus Busch turned it into a national success. Busch used the rail system to introduce the first fleet of refrigerated wagons, pioneered the use of pasteurization and launched the first national beer brand - Budweiser. by 1901 sales had reached 1 million barrels. Besides Budweiser and Michelob the company brew about 30 other beers.
You can find a much more detailed history on the official website: http://www.budweiser.com
------------------------------------------------------------ A Scotsman and an Englishman were flying across the Atlantic to New York when the stewardess approached. "May I get you something?" she asked. "Aye, a whisky" said the Scot. She poured him a drink then asked the Englishman if he'd like one. "Never!" he said sternly. "I'd rather be raped and ravished by prostitutes all the way to America than drink whisky!" The Scotsman hurriedly passed the drink back, saying "Aw man, I didnae ken there wis a choice!" ------------------------------------------------------------
* THE BEER *
The world's leading brand of beer was first brewed in 1876 and named after the famous brewing town in the Czech Republic. It is the epitome of light American lager, using rice in the mash to give it a clean, crisp taste (allegedly). Apparently, eight hop varieties are used but as it's so light on hop flavour or aroma you'd never guess. They also mature the beer in tanks containing beechwood chips to smooth out the flavour.
In some countries, such as Italy and Spain, where the Czech Budweiser registered their trade mark first, Anheuser-Busch has been forced to sell its beer as Bud. Britain is the only country where, following a court ruling, both beers are allowed to be sold as Budweiser. Confusing? Not really. Trust me, you'll only ever get these two mixed up once.
* THE POUR *
A bit of a misnomer here. I mean, hands up if you've ever seen anyone drink a bud from a glass. Not many. So what does it pour like? Bud pours to a crystal clear, pale yellow colour with a ridiculous amount of carbonation forming a white, bubbly head that doesn't last too long and leaves a token lace effect. Probably best to drink it from the bottle - always assuming that the bottle is clean of course.
* THE TASTE *
I WAS just going to leave this blank but I suppose I should write something. Try as hard as I might, I can't detect any real beer flavour in a Bud. Maybe a very slight maltiness but it's so faint that I could well be imagining it. Eight hop varieties? That dispels the old saying "variety's the spice of life". WATER. I can taste water. Perhaps not tasting anything is a bonus here. Bland doesn't even begin to describe it. Remember those beechwood chips they use to smooth out the flavour? Maybe they used too much - they've smoothed that flavour as flat as a pancake. Nearly forgot. This stuff is so gassy that even if you can't taste the beer, you'll be repeatedly tasting everything else for hours later.
* THE VERDICT *
At 5% ABV, you could be forgiven for thinking this was lower than that in alcohol content. You could certainly be forgiven for thinking it was lower in beer content. What you couldn't be forgiven for is describing it as a quality beer. As for food pairing, there's not much chance of bud interfering with anything at all - no possibility of a clash of flavours. Probably goes great with a Big Mac.
Here's a tip: Always serve Bud as cold as possible. In that way it is quite a refreshing thirst quencher on a hot day. For goodness sake, don't even think about drinking it warm. Unless of course you have a penchant for the flavour of residual water after boiling vegetables.
Would I drink it again? - For a dare, at a push, as a freebie, at a BBQ. Would I buy it again? - Would I FU**!
...The rice in particular gives Budweiser a taste not like any of the traditional British/Danish/Belgian lagers, and the rice also gives it its pale colour.
Bud has a smoother, more subtle taste, and lacks the bitter aftertaste and shudder-factor you can get with the likes of Stella. Yet it’s still nice and strong – 5% in GB, 4.3% in Ireland - in that all important factor, ALCOHOL.

The world famous and usual size is the 330ml brown long neck bottles, which go for £4.25 for a pack of 4 bottles or £7.98 for a pack of 10 bottles. Interestingly the shape of the neck of these bottles is part of the Bud experience. It delivers the right mix of beer and gas to add to the refreshing taste. I am not sure if this is fact but ...

...very original, title for a Budweiser opinion but hey, their adverts are great aren’t they!
I normally drink Budweiser (commonly known as Bud) wherever I go. I was originally a Fosters Ice girl but over time (and a few bottles) I find that it can become quite sickly. First of all, Budweiser is best if it is served ice cold – ideally with a glass that has been placed in the freezer for an hour (no joke, this is how it should be served). This has the effect of making it ideal for a hot summers day although it does reduce much of the taste of the beer.

Advantages: Great Flavour. Consistent. Goes Well with Food Disadvantages: Not enough of it
One of the world's truly great beers,Budweiser Budvar,is brewed at Ceske Budejovice in the Czech Republic. That country is ,of course,famed among beer connoiseurs for producing magnificent lagers and places such as Prague,Pilsen and Ceske Budejovice are renowned as great centres of beer production.
Among the very best of the Czech lagers,Budweiser Budvar, is the genuine article and should not be confused with Budweiser from the USA. There is,in my opinion,a world of difference between them,which I will not go into here.
Budweiser Budvar is full in colour and is virtually amber. It has a big,malty,full taste and is superbly balanced with the interaction of hops and malt. Like most other lagers from the Czech Republic,this fine beer has a very distinctive aroma with ever so subtle hints of yeast and bread.
As regards alcohol ...
Advantages: Crisp, tasty and refreshing Disadvantages: Easily confused with inferior brands
There's nothing better than a cold bottle of Budweiser, er...Budvar, er...Czechvar.......
This is the most famous of all Czech lagers and perhaps the classic example of it's style. The Budweiser brewery was founded in the town of Ceske Budejovice (Budweis in German) in 1895, using water from an underground lake.
WHAT'S IN A NAME
Anheuser-Busch first brewed Budweiser in St Louis in 1876 while the Budweiser Budvar brewery was launched in 1895. But for centuries previously, beers from the town of Budweis were known as Budweiser beers.
The American giant, and Budweiser Budvar have been at loggerheads for more than a century. The Czech beer is sold in the United States under the name Czechvar, and in fact Britain is the only country where, following a court ruling, both beers are allowed to be sold as Budweiser.
In ...
Advantages: Thirst quenching goodness Disadvantages: Possibly a bit more expensive than other lagers - but worth it!
In my opinion Budvar is truly the king of beers. Definately more satisfying than its American brother, Budweiser, this drink is more than perfect for summer barbeques, evenings in with a movie, or simply a night out down the pub with your mates.
The flavour of Budvar is, in my opinion, a little more yeasty than Budweiser, and it is better for it. Light, clean, crisp and really flavoursome, Budvar always quenches my thirst - with that first sip always the best!
Although it is possibly a little more expensive than other lagers, and not quite as readily available in pubs (although most are slowly catching on, and you can buy it from nearly all supermarket chains, so never fear!), I would recommend it to anyone with a discerning palate, and bit of extra change. You won't disappointed - and if you are, I won't mind getting rid ...
