I have now had the bike for seven years and only minor faults have come up in 20,000 miles, a small weep of oil from the rear cylinder rocker cover, and the flasher unit gave up the after a jet wash.
The brakes are great and I have never felt any need for improvment there, and Buells are well known for standing on there nose. The way the bike handles is a real eye opener, it just loves the twisty bits, and it is very easy to drive fast and relaxed.
This is no screaming nutter ! but nor is it a slow coach. You will not be dissapointed with the engine, what I mean is this, air cooled, push rod, self adjusting valves, one carb and long stroke V twin grunt and very good on fuel (55mpg is easy) all very simple and easy to live with, and being based on the Harley sportster spares should not be a problem.
Although I find my own bikes gearing a bit tall (3800 rpm =100mph) I very quickley got used to it and I just love the way that 1200cc thunder storm engine pulls when short shifting through the box, it is low reving with a smooth torque curve all the way to the limiter .
OK with the rose tinted specs off !! the the bike vibrates a fair bit at tick over, but smooths out the second you pull away and nothing has ever fallen off, the paint work marks very easily and some of the wiring seems a bit exposed though I have never had any problems with my bike being exposed to the rain (I stay in scotland).
The bike being a later m2 (2002 model) has a very good seat for two, and the exhaust being tucked under the bike means no burning boots or luggage.
The belt drive is very clean and easy to live with and my bike is still on its original belt. the gearbox is a bit heavy to change but so what ! it works perfect. I replaced the air filter housing and silencer with a harley stage one tune kit, the sound is great and the round filter is much better looking.
I have kept this bike because it is very easy to service, it is more than fast enough for me and there is a massive amount of stuff you can do for upgrades ect' ect' and it just feels like a motorcycle should, Do yourself a favor and test ride a Buell now.
