I bought a Buffalo WHR-G54S about 4 months ago to allow me to use my laptop anywhere in the house and connect to our cable modem. To start with, this product cannot be beaten on price.. I got it for £25 quid from an online retailer (can't remember which) which is half the price of some of the other brands on offer.
Technically it contains 802.11a/b/g for the wireless connectivity, 4 ethernet ports on the back, one ethernet port to connect to the modem and probably loads of other features I'll never use as I have a Mac It does contain something Buffalo call AOSS which I think is a one button set up for people with Windows, but as we have MacOS I didn't even bother trying.
The manual is a little slim on information and I did need to turn to the internet to get some help on how to access the configuration page but once in, it took about 10 minutes to get up and running with a secured wireless network. On the security front it uses WEP and WPA (the two most common security protocols) which is compatible with pretty much anything.
With regards reliability, well we haven't had to turn it off or reset it at all since plugging it in - it's been online and working for about 4 months with no problems. The speed is excellent and the signal more than strong enough in the main rooms around our house...so can't fault it on that front.
Some people might not like the fact it has a little stick up aerial but it's not the ugliest looking piece of kit, we keep it hidden next to the sofa and you'd never know it was there let alone worry about what it looks like.
In summary, quick, reliable and excellent value for money. Could do with a better instruction book but with the internet to hand it was fairly painless to get it up and running.
