While flicking through one of my many catalogues, I came across a funny wee seat for babies aged from 4 months. It was called a Bumbo Seat. By looking at it you would think it was made of hard plastic and I wondered what it was all about. The picture on the page showed a baby sitting on a beach.
While chatting to friends, a few of them mentioned the bumbo seat that they had bought and how great they were for using when going to granny's house or to a friends house or even in your own for allowing the child to sit up more easily.
I checked through the net and discovered that these seats are available for many prices varying from about £22 to £32. A lot of the companies then charged a delivery charge, which takes it up from about £26 to £36. SO it could work out quite expensive. I bought mine from the Grobag company and it cost just under £26 and arrived in 2 days from the order being confirmed.
The seats come in 4 colours, Aqua, blue lime green and Yellow. I got a blue one after a lot of thought. The lime green one which a friend had was very bright, that I joked I needed sunglasses to look at it!
When the seat arrived I was still expecting this hard plastic seat. I was very surprised to find that it was fairly soft yet tough and very light. My son sat in it quite happily, though not too sure what it was all about. The feel of it reminds me of a rubber sort of feeling, but at the same time a foam sort of feel. It's a bit difficult to explain.
A bumbo is recommended from 4 months when a baby can hold their head up without support. The maximum weight the seat can hold is 10kg which works out roughly to about 22lbs. It can be used on any flat surface, but I have always used it on the floor as I was concerned that the baby may tip it. The seat is a round shape with 2 shaped holes on one side, which the legs fit through. One child who saw it in my house mentioned the word 'Potty' when he saw it and to an extent it could remind you of a potty and I would be careful to ensure that a child who is potty training doesn't make the mistake of using it as a potty!
One concern I had about the seat was that when my son was in it, it meant that he couldn't reach toys easily and he constantly tried to get himself out of it when he was trying to reach his toys.
It was however idea for him in the garden as he wasn't too sure of grass and it also was great when he was unable to sit without support behind him. It was also very handy to take with us to friends house so that we could feed him his solids as they didn't have a highchair. I found that when I spilt food on the bumbo that it wiped clean very easily and didn't stain at all, but it could have been because I cleaned it before it got a chance to settle.
My Bumbo is now an excess seat as my son likes to be free and roll about now, but it is waiting on the arrival of a friends baby to get some use out of it. If you can't borrow one, make sure that you don't spend a lot of money buying one. I would definately have one though. It's a bit like the must have seat for a baby.

I've just bought myself one of these from Ebay - I didn't want to pay £30 for one!! There are so many for sale on there, but EVERYONE is trying to get their hands on one, so I ended up paying £24! It hasn't arrived yet, but I'm looking forward to it, your baby looks very cute in his!! Unfortunately I've ended up with the lime green one - I wanted the lilac one! Nevermind, can't be fussy eh! Good Op. Kerpots x

great op. My son is a big old for a bumbo now but I may consider it for the next one, once we find the surrogate :)
