Burgon and Ball Dandelion weeder

When we bought our house it came complete with a beautiful garden, but over 6 years of increasing neglect as we have focussed on the interior, and also had kids, the garden has reverted more back to the field it once was. We were feeling rather bad that we were letting the neighbourhood down, so at the start of this summer I decided it was time to do something about it. My Dad gave me one of these weeding tools a while ago. I had never seen one like it before or used one so didnt really know what it was for. It is a very weird shape, it has a long wooden handle and then a metal bit sticking out which looks a bit like a giant screwdriver but it has a small v cut in the bottom of it. The idea is to dig this in around the roots of a weed like a dandelion and then lever it out of the ground. The soil in our garden gets really hard when it hasnt been dug over for ages and it can feel like you are trying to dig into concrete where its so hard. the weeds that come ... more
