We have kept burmese for 16 years now and intend always to have a pair in the house. They are deeply affectionate and loving, especially with older people and children. They are also highly intelligent and have high emotional needs (NOT in the way of yowly siamese) so I would recommend they are kept in pairs as they value another burmese as company unless people are always around. The burmese cat club and burmese society have rescue and rehome pages if money is tight but these beasts are real value for money. Also register with local rescue centres for burmese cross kittens. One of our late burmese slept with my boy from when he started school and i credit him with said boys reading progresss as he used to lie in bed with cat purring on shoulder /pillow reading out loud to him "so he would have a story before bedtime too". These are the best cats as famiy pets - even of they do bring presents!
