Then I played burnout 3. I had tampered around with the first burnout and, while I thought the graphics were pretty good, I wasn't really given any indication that I was playing a prequel to what would become one of the most addictive and enjoyable racing games of the next gen consoles.

Not that burnout 3 is just another run of the mill racing game. You don't have to actually pass your driving test again (like the gran tourismo series), you aren't invited to spend weeks 'modding' your car (juiced, need for speed) or given any rocket launchers or flame throwers (mashed). What your are able to do is cause damage. As in GTA levels of damge.

They are: Race - does what it says on the tin! Road Rage - you have to take down as many other drivers as possible before the time runs out or your car falls apart, Face off - one-on-one race where you win your opponents car, Burning lap - a ridiculously fast lap in an F1 car just against the clock Pursuit - chase and hit 1 particular car before taking him out (anyone remember arcade classic 'apb'?), Elimination - 6 laps where every lap last place is eliminated and finally Grand Prix - you recieve points for your place over 3 races. You are constantly encouraged in all modes to take out the opposition and cause as much damage as possible; during an event your boost bar (a kind of nitro injection) is increased for every car you take out, you are given a new car for compiling enough points and takedowns, aswell as unlocking new events and awards. You are constantly rewarded for taking risks - driving safely on the right side of the road gets you nothing here.
If this were not enough gameplay for the single player there is also 'Crash mode' in which the amount of havoc and damage you are required to create hits all new levels of chaos. The premise is simple. You, a crossroads and a lot of traffic. Your aim: cause the most amount of damage possible. This is measured in $ value so it's best to aim for the bigger vehicles such as tankers or busses. There are also various pick ups which multiply your final score.
The graphics are sublime, no driving game gets anywhere near creating the genuine feel of speed you get from this title and the sound - with it's punk rock upbeat soundtrack and growling motors fit perfectly. The only downside is the dj, Striker, whose script is very entertaing but limited. You will find yourself repeating levels over and over again as the game progresses and you are treated to the same lines over and over again. It's a minor niggle though and I really can't recommend this game enough - to anyone who can hold a pad.
Advantages: Easy to pick up, easy to play, easy to get hooked to. Disadvantages: Hard to put down.
As a self-confessed fan of Burnout and Burnout 2, I was itching to get my hands on the third incarnation of the series; Burnout 3 - Takedown.
The hype was there; the game was being hailed as one of the best, if not THE best, arcade racer on the Xbox - but I‘ve been burnt too many times by games that don‘t live up to their marketing. Plus, Burnout 2 was a top notch game and it was hard to see how it could be improved. Sure, it could have done with ... ...brand-new, shrink wrapped copy of Burnout 3, knowing that I was either going to be blown away by a massively new game, or sorely disappointed by a repackaged product with a different number at the end.
After far more hours of playing than I care to reveal, I am pleased to say that Burnout 3 does not disappoint in any way. If Burnout 2 was a massive step forward from the original, then Burnout 3 is an Olympic hop-skip and jump away from its predecessor.

...picked up a copy of Burnout 3. It seemed the perfect solution as it had been released the same day and having briefly played Burnout 2 on the PS2 I knew it would be a pretty good game.
I didn’t realise however just how addictive it was going to be. The game is built up of three different continents to race across during the Burnout World Tour. You can test yourself on courses in America, Europe and the Far East. Over the three continents there are ... ...other events.
An advantage Burnout has over other racing games is that it’s not just about the racing. You also get a lot more bonuses and can unlock numerous different vehicles by taking down your competitors in a variety of different ways. The basic idea is to not only win the race but to take out as many other drivers along the way as you possibly can. Advantages: Many types of gameplay and hundreds of cars Disadvantages: A lot of glitches, more variety in multiplayer needed.
...type of gameplay is the Burnout World Tour. You are sent on different events, to win medals and new cars at. The different events include Races, 1 on 1 Races, Road Rage, Crash, Grand prix's and more. By winning medals here, you unlock cars sometimes, but mainly you will unlock new events.
Or, if you get bored/stuck you can try a single event. On these, you can choose what you want event to take part in, what track to use, what cars.. etc and do ... ...this game takes you, and after a while this game does become like a wipeout city, causing relentless boredom, and complete repetivity.

Ok, now this is the best part of the game. There is something called 'Crash FM'. It is a radio station with 42 different old school songs on, so you won't get the stupid looping music that you get in most other games. And, with 42 songs, there's bound to be something there that suits what you like.

OVERALL OPINION:
Think Project Gotham did it for the XBox? Well Burnout3: Takedown does it for the PS2. Truly the best racing game ever on PS2, and even possibly in the console world! Buy it now!
