Take me down to Paradise City...

Advantages: Fun, addictive, seriously playable, and the CARNAGE :)
Disadvantages: Can be difficult to get used to, easy to get lost in races

...that is.

Burnout is one of a series of games that I previously had a severe dislike for. The graphics looked a little too plastic, the physics and handling weren't the best and to be honest the games were totally infuriating. It wasn't until Buggy came home from a days shopping last year, clutching a copy of Burnout : Takedown that I actually wondered whether I may have misjudged. I need to digress a bit here, but most of the point ...
...great delight that I got Burnout Paradise.

Burnout Paradise doesn't have a story to it. You're basically one guy in a big city and apart from gaining all the licences by winning races, there is no other real aim. The lack of story though doesn't really stop it from being a great game. To be honest, actually having some sort of story would have probably detracted from the whole thing, while the open ended format works quite well.

Burnout Paradise Party Pack

Advantages: New vibrant visuals, party mode is fun, vehicle dynamics changed, Criterion constantly supporting game
Disadvantages: None!

...the first premium DLC for Burnout Paradise, the Party Pack. Is it another success for Criterion Games? Read on to find out... So, I went into the PlayStation Store to download the new Party Pack which cost me £7.99 (Note: For those who not downloaded Burnout Paradise from the Store or bought the retail version, get the Ultimate Box from retailers or the Ultimate Bundle download from the PlayStation Store). I then updated the game to version 1.6. ...

Burnout Paradise : The Ultimate Box

Advantages: Longetivity, Custom Playlist, Graphics, Cars
Disadvantages: Too Easy, No in game GPS, No Car Customisation

...A nice edition to Burnout Paradise : The Ultimate Box which wasn't previously in Burnout Paradise is the offline multiplayer lobby. Here you and seven others can take part in challenges with the winner of each challenge collecting the points. each player takes it in turn to complete the challenge. The challenges can be hand-picked or chosen at random by the computer, with a maximum of 8 challenges being allowed for each competition. Another nice ...
...own music playlist to the game. Although, I feel this should be included in alot more games than it currently is. ~Improvements~ One of the few downpoints to the game is that when your racing through the city you can set waypoints on the map. So when going at high-speed down minor roads it is very easy to get lost, which can be a little annoying. A compass at the top of the screen and vehicle indicators are used to show you which way to turn, but ...

Super racing game!

Advantages: great free roam abillity and loads to do - great online
Disadvantages: have to adjust to large city

Burnout Paradise is the most recent racing (and crashing) game in quite a long series of great, well structured arcade racing games. However this one certainly breaks away from the norm and enters into this new 'open-world gameplay', and in my opinion they have certainly succeeded and have created a massive 30km wide city perfectly suited to Burnout's nature - to race and crash! At first the city can be very overwhelming particularly if you were ...
...and aim to get the Burnout Licence and rove you are the best driver. The better your licence the better cars you can unlock and more challenges can be participated in. If you don't fancy doing any of these races then you can always roam around Paradise City and try and destroy some of those billboards (120) or crash gates (400), or even complete some of the famous stunt jumps (50). If that doesn't take your fancy you can try and set some time records ...

Burnout Paradise: ALMOST Paradise.

Advantages: Fun driving, Great online functions, Good DLC
Disadvantages: Navigation issues, frustrating at times

Ever since Burnout 2: Point of Impact, this series of games has been the manifestation of ten year old boy's dreams the world over. Fast cars, loud noises, and massive crashes. If that's the sort of thing that makes your eyes light up with glee, then the rest of this review is irrelevant - you have to buy this game. For the rest of you however, primeval thrill alone is probably not enough of a selling point, so let's have a look at what makes Burnout ...
...something a little different with Burnout 2. Gone were the simple "first to the line" mechanics of old and in their place came boost functions and mini games rewarding the most carnage achieved in a single crash. Burnout 3 introduced the idea of "takedowns", where you ram opponents off the road in spectacular fashion in order to win the race, or as the sole objective in certain game modes. These radical ideas, coupled with cars whose main purpose ...

Take me home to the Paradise City

Advantages: The free run of a huge city in some very flash cars.
Disadvantages: The bike experience isn't quite there. Other driving games offer more variety.

spin out, for instance. Driving about the city has a downside though; it's hard work racing with only a small moving map at the bottom of the screen to guide you, and you'll really need to put some time in learning things at street level to get the most out of the game, which might disappoint more casual players. Only meticulous preparation will win you races, and it pays to do them time and time again to get it right. As is the usual with driving games these days, there's also an online mode andBurnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box (PS3) this is where the game really comes alive as up to eight can battle it out together with also Freeburn Online, an ongoing sandbox mode. Sadly it's missing the two player mode of the earlier Burnout games though, which allowed two players to duel away at the one console, which takes the edge off a bit ...

Dirty?

Advantages: great physics, great graphics and sound, immersive, lots of tracks
Disadvantages: lacking in multiplayer or split screen action

I've never been a fan of driving games. They always did my head in because i couldn't get the hang of it and i could never come first. Even in Grand Theft Auto, on the missions where you had to race, i hated them and avoided them if i could. BUT since i've had my PS3 i've downloaded about 10 different driving game demos (motorstorm, Dirt, F1, Burnout Paradise, Need for speed pro street etc). Out of them all, two appealed most. Dirt and Motorstorm. Two very different games. Motorstorm is mostly set in the desert in the USA, with a huge variety of vehicles (trucks, bikes, large rigs, buggies, cars etc), a banging sound-track and forgiving game-play (if you go off the track or destroy your vehicle you just get a brand new one placed back on the track). Dirt on the other hand is primaririly a rally driving game. Its fast, rough ...
