Still ploughing through my Burt's Bees travel-sized products, I come to the carrot nutritive body lotion. It seems that Burt's Bees like their unusual ingredients though, I have already reviewed their tomato toner, but if you think that's ... ...you feel ill!)…why carrots? Well Burt's Bees say that carrot seed oil is valued for its soothing and relaxing properties, and the beta-carotene it contains is also a great anti-oxidant. Still ploughing through my Burt's Bees travel-sized products, I come to the carrot nutritive body lotion. Despite using the Burt's Bees Milk and Honey body lotion and loving it, I wasn't so keen to try this one - the thought of smelling like something that accompanies Sunday lunch put me off slightly!
It seems that Burt's Bees like their unusual ingredients though, I have already reviewed their tomato toner, but if you think that's weird, think again. Recently at work we were discussing some of the more unusual/disgusting/downright crazy things that people use as beauty products in their quest for radiant beauty or eternal youth. These included urine body wash, bird poo face masks and to top it off (and my goodness does this top it off) face cream made with ground babies foreskin. Yes, you really did read that correctly, and please, let me apologise for not giving adequate warning to those of you who may have recently eaten, but I saw it in an episode of Rich Girls, so it must be true!
Anyway, moving swiftly on, I bet you're wondering (now that I have quite unnecessarily made you feel ill!)…why carrots? Well Burt's Bees say that carrot seed oil is valued for its soothing and relaxing properties, and the beta-carotene it contains is also a great anti-oxidant. All sounds very good, but I still wasn't completely convinced about using this. With the promises that it would pamper my skin and give 'remarkable results' I thought I would give it a go - after all, as I've already discussed there are much worse things I could rub all over my body. Ahem!
The body lotion comes in a yellow bottle with a white screw top lid. Not surprisingly the label features a picture of (yes, you've guessed it) a carrot. I'm not hugely enamoured by Burt's Bees packaging - I often feel it is a bit plain and uninteresting, and this is no exception. I think given the price of the products, most (although admittedly not all) of the Burt's Bees packaging looks quite cheap. This bottle seems to say Poundland more than it says Premium.
Initially, I did not feel that the lotion smelled like carrots. It has a creamy smell and you can detect the scent of the beeswax it contains. I wasn't particularly keen on the smell - it was very strange and a little bit sickly too!
The lotion is a mustard yellow colour, and the bottle warns that it could stain your clothes, which makes finding a convenient time to apply this a little bit of a problem! As of yet, it hasn't stained my clothes or sheets, but I am conscious that it could, so try to avoid contact with any sort of fabric straight after applying this.
The lotion is a nice consistency, being neither runny nor thick. I was pleased to see that even the smallest amount of lotion goes a long way, in contrast to the Burt's Bees Milk and Honey lotion, of which I found a large amount was required to cover even a small area of skin. The lotion rubs in easily, and although it feels quite greasy initially, it soon sinks into the skin, without leaving any sort of greasy film.
Once on the skin, unfortunately I found that the smell of the carrot seed oil started to come out! It's not really a strong carrot smell, but it's detectable and I didn't like it at all - especially when combined with the beeswax - that seems to add to the unpleasantness of it all!
In terms of moisturising abilities, yes, I must admit, it did leave my skin feeling very moisturised. It felt soft and smooth, and a lot less dried out than usual. Saying that, I have used lots of cheaper, nicer smelling lotions which give exactly the same results and there was nothing about the way my skin felt that particularly made me think that this lotion was worth buying again.
The lotion costs £13.50 for a 236ml bottle from Boots.
It probably wont come as any surprise that I don't think I will be buying the full sized bottle of this lotion! I really didn't like the smell, it's way, way overpriced, I find it very annoying that it contains ingredients that could stain your clothes and although it left my skin soft, there was nothing to make the moisturising abilities of this product really stand out.
Advantages: made from recyled material, not tested on animals, smell is quite nice Disadvantages: Leaves a greasy feeling on my skin, takes quite a long time to absorb
Recently I was given a Burt's Bees gift bag with lots of Burt's Bees miniatures in it. One of these was the 'Carrot Nutritive Body Lotion'. The bottle I got was a 29.5ml size, but it is also available to buy in a full sized bottle which holds 236ml and costs around £13. Burt's Bees products are quite easy to get a hold of, with a lot of shops selling them. They are also widely available online. The miniature bottle looks exactly the same as the full ... ...looking for products. Unfortunately these are pretty much the only things I like about the product, I am not keen on the actual body lotion at all! I find it a shame since I really like some of the other Burt's Bees products, but this one just wasn't for me. ...

Advantages: Nicely absorbed with a silky finish Disadvantages: Not good for vegans, may stain clothing
Burt's Bees Healthy healing Carrot Nutritive Body Lotion.
I was a bit dubious about this product. Carrot body lotion? Sounds rather odd to say the least. As usual, Burt's Bees products are as close to 100% natural as humanly possible and this item is 99.68% on the wholesome scale.
It goes look a little like pale mustard and can stain clothing if you are not careful with the rubbing in. The thick lotion is meant for all-over body usage. It does ... ...fades gently away leaving lovely soft skin. A few other facts:
It contains a Burt's Bees staple ingredient, beeswax, so vegan's might want to stear clear.
It comes packed in a recyclable bottle, which is 90% post recycled materials already. Paraben free. Pthalate free too. ...

Advantages: Gorgeous smell, VERY moisturising Disadvantages: Not to be used on peeling or sunburnt skin
This great body lotion by Burts Bees contains skin nourising ingredients such as carrot oil, coconut oil, sweet orange peel wax, sunflower oil, aloe vera and sugar. It goes on light, is easy and quick to apply, it sinks in quickly and leaves skin soft and smooth. I love the comforting, sweet natural scent which makes you feel like your doing something really good for your skin. Taken from the Burts Bees website some information on carrot oil: "Carrot ... ...from ground seeds is rich in Beta-Carotene and is valued for its soothing, relaxing properties. It is believed to stimulate cell renewal as well as the sweat and sebaceous glands. It is beneficial to mature or dry skin, helping to deter or reduce wrinkles. It also protects skin exposed to weather extremes. The oil has a heavy, woodsy, earthy, fruity scent." ...
