I paid only £199 for my 28" widescreen television set a few months ago, from Aldi in Haverhill. I have a friend who lives there, and he had spotted these in store. By the time we got there, there was only four left. I bought three - one for myself and two others for friends who later reimbursed me.
What can I say? I have seen comparable looking sets on sale in Dixons on the High Street and at Tesco for more than double the money!
I did find the manual a little bit difficult to understand at first, but managed to decipher it in the end!
The set has different screen size selections, so you don't have to chop heads off etc if viewing something that's not in widescreen format. Quality stereo sound & smart looking unit which looks a lot more expensive than it was.
It also seems a lot bigger than 28". I've seen other 28" sets around where the screen just seems smaller than mine - I had to check the specification when I returned home to make sure mine was only a 28".
The only snag with the price is that Aldi only offer a few of these 'specials' at a time, and I've not heard of them being back in store since - so I guess I got a real bargain which may not be available now. Oh well!
FEATURES: Automatic Channel Search - Tunes the TV automatically to channels available in your area.
Name - Call the channels what you like - anything at all up to 7 characters (I've used BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Four, Five, Video, Games).
Hide - Allows you to hide a channel so only you can find it.
Manual Tuning - Just in case the Automatic Channel Search cannot locate the channel you're looking for. I had problems with Channel 5 but found it manually.
Lock - Set a three-digit password to stop certain channels being viewed - ideal for those explicit Sky channels, eh?!! You can also put a password lock on the TV itself - ideal if you're going out and the kids have homework to do!
Mute - Turn off the sound at the press of a button. Great if the kids are asleep upstairs and you think they may be waking up.
Widescreen Format: Conventional TV programmes are viewed in 4:3 format and a black area appears on either side of the picture when viewed on a widescreen TV. You can expand the 4:3 format to fit the screen, albeit slightly distorted.
Status - View on screen the sound level, whether mono or stereo, picture and audio presets, channel name and number, and the time.
Swap Button - Enables you to flick between the currently viewed channel and the one viewed previously. Great if watching a film and the footy is on the other side!
Headphone Socket - Headphones are not included with the TV. If you buy a pair, they must have a 3.5mm diameter stereo plug and an impedence of 8-32 ohms.
Timer & Clock - Set the TV to turn itself off at a certain time (great if you're snoozing on the sofa whilst watching a film). You can also set the TV to change channels at a preset time. This obviously saves you much energy - as you won't have to press a button on the remote control unit later!
Teletext - View the text over the programme using the 'mix' button. The 'Index' button brings up the index page of the text immediately. If you're short-sighted you can view the text in double size format! Also includes 'Fast-text' feature - using the colour coded buttons to access areas of teletext much quicker.
