On purchasing the Bush 2008 I found out that it is multi region out of the box, this means you can play discs from all over the world, a nice litle feature if you want to get films that little bit earlier.
The 2008 is an unremarkable entry-level player, housed in a compact and unobtrusive silver-grey box. The simple, no-frills theme is carried across to the features list. But for £99 you can't complain. It's so easy to set ... ...your off, if you have a dolby digital amp (see my opinion of the Sony HT-BE1) then you can plug it the amp using a digital coax, this will produce a far better sound than going through your TV.
The setup menu on the 2008 is very techie sounding and may meke you think it's complicated, but it's not, the audio output and Dolby setup options, including things like SPDIF/RAW and RF REMOD. It's okay if you know what S/PDIF etc. means (Sony/Philips ... more

It's okay if you know what S/PDIF etc. means (Sony/Philips Digital Interface, also called: coaxial and optical digital audio outputs), but without any explanation it only serves to confuse. But looking through the manual on setting up the 2008 will inform you that SPDIF/RAW is for dolby digital amps, SPDIF/PCM is for 2 channel amps with a digital imput and ANALOG is for the old phono plugs.
There are several settings for what type of Scart you are using I found the RGB setting gave the best picture quality, if you plan to play region 1 discs then you can also set the player to automatically switch between PAL (UK) and NTSC (USA) screen format. DVD+RW discs are not recognised but it has no problems with DVD-R recordings.
The picture quality is good, but some darker DVD's do tend to show a minute amout of pixelation (tiny blocks of colour) but this is not noticable unless you are checking every bit of the film as you watch it. Bright films like Monster Inc. are amazing the lines are well defind and the colours are really vibrant.
Digital and analogue audio outputs are clean and CD and MP3 replay is fine for providing background sounds. There is no mention of MP3 playback in the manual I found this by pure accident after inserting an MP3 disc and found it played.
The 2008 also has a parental lock and password system, handy when you don't want the kids watching something they shouldn't, but the parental lock only seems to work on american discs.
The remote control is quite small but it has all the features you need on it, such play, pause, stop, step, forward, rewind, menu, display etc. So it doesn't need to be massive to do it's job and it does it's job well, the buttons are responsive and it works from good tricky angles.
To Recap: Is the 2008 easy to install? ---------------------------- Yes, plug in the scart lead supplied, turn it on and your off.
Is there a long pause between layer transition? ----------------------------------------------- No, the pause is shorter than clicking your fingers, in 98% of the films i've watched I couldn't see the pause.
Does the 2008 have a Dolby Digital decoder? ------------------------------------------- Yes, but to watch a film in pure Dolby Digital or DTS you will need a Dolby Digital amp with a Coaxial connection.
Is there an option to change the Dolby setup? --------------------------------------------- Yes, you can change the DRC (Dynamic Range Compression) from the Dolby Setup menu.
I don't have a Dolby amp, can i still get good sound? ----------------------------------------------------- Yes, goto the Dolby setup menu and select RF REMOD this will produce a crisper sound from your tv, mono or nicam.
Do I need a code to make it Multi-Region? ----------------------------------------- No, just plug in, turn on and it is ready to play all regions including RCE (Region Code Enhanced)
Advantages: Fantastic Value for the price Disadvantages: May not be available anymore
control is full of all the DVD features including a zoom mode, but I found it quite light in weight.
You get on screen and a display on the player of the track, chapter and time of the DVD or CD that you are playing which is handy for remaining running time of the complete DVD, chapter etc.
I thought I'd never find a better player but, I upgraded to the Bush2008, virtually that same as the 2002 but the pause between layers is a lot faster, a lot of the time you don't see it pause, there's a slight improment over sound and picture qualaty. If you can't get hold of the 2002 model then go for the 2008.
Why pay £400 for a DVD player when you can get one better for under £200. (In some places you can get the 2008/A for under £100, Littlewoods for example).
So what does the bush play?
Well it plays DVD, CD, CDR, CDRW, VCD & MP3 Discs ...
