I don’t know how much longer we are going to be using video recorders with tapes. So the last thing I wanted to do was lash out on an expensive one at this point in time.
My old video was perfectly ok. But the remote packed up. As it was a so called "transmitter" remote. It would be costly to replace, with no guarantee that a new one would even work. So I have to shop for an brand new video.
I found the new machine, stylish, light weight and easy to use, and adequate for my purpose, which is mainly time shifting, i.e. recording something so that I can watch it at my convenience at a later time/date.
The VCR906 has auto tune, and a capacity for 14 channels. More than I need for basic analogue Terrestrial TV. However, if the signal is week you have to use the semi manual tuning facility to set it up. It has an 8 program 1 month timer, and it has NTSC so you can play your American tapes. It also has SECAM. But I don’t think it will play French tapes, but it will play Asian ones.
The instruction manual is very good. Easily understandable, with plenty of illustrations. But, the VCR is fairly intuitive to work with, so it’s easy to get the hang of it.
I am happy with my purchase. The picture and sound quality are good. But everything has a drawback, and this is no exception. Once I made a mistake programming the timer. That is to say, I forgot to use the 24 hour clock. As a result, it expected to record from 12:30 p.m. till 1.00 a.m., and there was no way I could stop it!
First I tried the stop button, and eject button. But I had a pretty good idea they wouldn't work. So I went into the menu, selected timer recordings and tried to delete the offending program. But the software wouldn't let me go there.*
As a last resort I took the plug out of the wall socket and put it back in again, and still it was recording. So I had to remove the plug again and leave it out for half an hour. That finally stopped it. But I had to reset the clock again, and reprogram all my other programs.
