The Millionaire Next Door could be YOU!

Advantages: Motivational
Disadvantages: A lot of in-depth statistical information

...book so much, I bought the hardback. Stanley and Danko have researched those who are first generation wealthy in the USA - who they are, how they got there and what has happened to their consumption habits. Until this research, it was assumed that the richer you got, the more you spent (nicer car, clothes and home etc). Not only have the authors discovered that most self-made millionaires continue to live a lower middle class lifestyle post wealth, ...
...high income is not not the same as being wealthy - 'rich' subjects are divided into the Balance Sheet Affluent (BSA) and the Income Statement Affluent (ISA). Most of the Millionaires Next Door have started their own businesses but there are case studies of others who have made their fortunes 'playing great defence' [living beneath their means] whilst researching and investing for the long term. As someone a VERY long way from millionaire status, ...

This book is about you...

Advantages: Enthralling, intelligent analysis of the internet consumer revolution
Disadvantages: Relentless Californian optimism

...all, Ciao is part of the Long Tail and you're part of it. "The Long Tail" was a smash hit and it is easy to see why. This book is an energetic, savvy and perceptive look at the cultural impact of the internet revolution. Specifically, it looks at the explosion of consumer choice that has resulted from web technology. Instead of being constrained by publishers and Hollywood studios to choose from a few, pre-selected "hits", we are able to access ...
...shows convincingly that sales of the "long tail" of non-hits is cumulatively as large and important as sales of the "hits" themselves. Even more importantly, the rapid advance of technology and instant distribution of the internet has put creative power in the hands of - everyone. Through a website, the blogosphere, self-publishing on Lulu.com, or even recording music and short films, we can create content almost on an equal footing with the professionals. ...

Nifty Thrifty - A Money Saving Book!

Advantages: Gives some good old fashioned tips, with common sense thrown in too.
Disadvantages: None that I can think of.

Thrifty Ways for Modern Days - edited by Martin Lewis ***What's it about?*** This is another money saving book I am reviewing, it is edited by Martin Lewis and brings together lots of advice from the Money Saving Expert forums. It particularly draws upon the 'Old Style' thread, which is a very strong chat thread, where people post their ideas for saving money in ways that were second nature in days gone by. Sadly, some of this advice has been lost ...
...aim to bring these old ideas back into fashion again. The book is split into chapters consisting of: 1. Cleaning 2. Shopping 3. Clothes and Shoes 4. Home Maintenance and DIY 5. The Good Life - Grow Your Own 6. Presents and Home Made Gifts 7. Christmas, Weddings and Other Occasions 8. The Old Style Recipe Book There are lots of little excerpts with real old-style stories, which are experiences submitted from members of the website. ***Opinion*** At ...

Tescocalypse now

Advantages: Some eye-opening statistics; good material for supermarket opponents
Disadvantages: Very one-sided; poorly put together

I was rather amused and surprised to see that Andrew Simm's "Tescopoly: How one shop came out on top and why it matters" can be bought through the Tesco website; the book is a well-researched account of how Tesco has been able to gain such a dominant position in the UK retail sector and the effect that the growth in power of a few retailers combined with a system that allows then to go virtually unchecked has had on our local communities. Early ...
...guilty of some of the accusations he levels against the company though it quickly becomes apparent that Simms finds Tesco particularly abhorrent. It's important to know, however, that Andrew Simms works for a left-wing think tank and is a tireless campaigner on subjects such as global poverty, environmentalism and globalisation. Simms's basic premise is that the increasing dominance of a few companies is bad for both our local communities and the ...

I'm Having Fish Tonight...?

Advantages: Very thought provoking and informative
Disadvantages: Not neccessarily the easiest book to read

...dragged it at speed across the plains of Africa. This fantastical assemblage would scoop up everything in its way: predators, such as lions and cheetahs, lumbering endangered herbivores, such as rhinos and elephants, herds of impala and wildebeest....Picture how the net is constructed, with a huge metal roller attached to the leading edge. This rolling beam smashes and flattens obstructions, flushing creatures into the approaching filaments. The ...

For centuries the seas have been seen as inexhaustible, with debates raging from as early as the 1800’s as to whether the effect of fishing would have either direct or indirect impacts on either the fish stocks being exploited or the surrounding environment. In fact for many years the majority of the world’s fisheries have been treated as open access resources – where fisherman ...
