I attended a BSc Management Studies course at a north london university. Westmin ster.
The course lasted 3 years on a full time basis, that meant no dole, no real time to work if i was serious about completing this course.
The course cost approximately £1000 a year though i am sure the prices for a full time course are slightly higher these days. Though where there is a willingness to learn there is always a way regardless of the price paid.
Method of study is lecture based on a 1 sometimes 2 hour in a lecture theater reading (per subject). A 1 hour seminar meeting with an allocated tutor is also offered every other fortnight. Some weeks there may be a seminar other weeks none.
The quality of the lecturers. Some were completely useless in explaining foreign topics. What i mean by this, is that they would give out a piece of typed paper with the lecture notes, and give a talk for about 50 minutes and after that what ever sunk in the mind stayed. No real explanation that helped understand an area of the subject. Every week would be included a business related case studies and exercises. The individual and group work presentations and coursework were also encouraged on a regular basis.
Use of IT, was also used heavily, in terms of learning how to present work different computer programs. The use of report style writing was strongly advised to pass a course.
The way the course is worked is based on the compulsory subjects chosen given in the course outline. Therefore certain subjects are an absolute such as Information Technology, Business Law, Human resource managment learning theories and case studies, and Marketing.
The majority of the topics course structure i chose, comprised of 70% exam based results, and 30% coursework.
The number of subjects that are chosen each year depended on the course scheme and timetable. The way it worked back in 2003 was that 15 credits per module, a total of 320 credits are needed for a full degree. So all in all over 3 years 20-22 different subjects are taken, or 7-8 a year. The pass mark standard is usually 40% or above, otherwise the subject has to be re taken.
I found a heavy workload especially in the final year with the major project came up, and more often than not leaving work to the last minute to get things done. This is case of bad planning.
The second and third years are much more specialised in terms of the subjects that again are compulsory along with the optional modules.
Was it worth studying? In terms of academic achievement yes i learned a great deal about myself, and the business thinking that takes place in real life. It also gave me a chance to study more specialised business related ( external non academic courses).
I found that still writing here on ciao obviously illustrates the limitations of the course and more further in depth topic study and work experience is needed. It gave me a good opportunity working with other people to see how group working plays a part in everyday working life and socially.
Extra costs such as travel to University, living expenses, books, food/drink (alcohol) are extra costs that soon add up in a big way. I was fortunate enough to stay at home and be boring though i learned it saved me a packet of cash. Stories of people being beyond 20k in debt after completion is an indication that the system is harsh for studying. This suggests a home based long distance class is deemed more appropriate for mature students.
Please note my A level results were A B C. I passed the degree course with a pub degree class Third. Though my first and second year results where much better than my final rating.
Overall i feel much better having taken the degree as it has enabled me to develop my self confidence, and it has given me exemptions from other Business related courses, such as ACCA, CIMA, CIM and some other specially recognised qualifications.
Conclusion is that a Degree not just business related, is a worthwhile but very serious option that people can use in life. This of course does not teach how to become a manager, or business leader straightaway, as these are learned through actual work experience, which the degree may or may not teach. Some might say that a degree is a waste of time, though in my experience this is not the case.
Advantages: Study when you can, no lectures to attend. Disadvantages: The price of some of the courses.
...course so far, B200 Understanding Business Behaviour which has now been discontinued and replaced by a new course. I did find some parts of the course mundane, a little bit like going through the motions, although this could have been as a result of all the things going on in my life at the time, as I gave birth to my first baby half way through! Advantages: Distance learning, good reputation, good quality materials, reasonable cost Disadvantages: Variable tuition - best for self starters
...the tutors do have a business background. However, this is not for the disorganised or faint-hearted. You need to be numerate and literate to get the most out of the course, and, given that 90% of the work will be done at home, a modicum of self-discipline is required. Anyone taking this course should already be working in management, (not necessarily commercial - there are many students from charities and the public sector) preferably with a related ... ...there is a very steep learning curve in the first 18 months.
Accreditation is via submission of Tutor-marked Assignments (mini-dissertations) and a three hour examination. The questions are usually reasonably sensible and flexible and students are encouraged to relate their answers to course concepts and materials to their own working life. Overall, recommended. ...

The course takes approximately 6 years to complete if you take the recommendation of 60 points per year.
The Certificate in Accountancy is a compulsory course within this qualification. It costs £1800 but after receiving your certificate you can gain access to CIMA etc. This is great for the budding mature accountancy student. I would thoroughly recommend this course to anyone.

I live on the IOW and so it means having to get the boat to the mainland and having to travel to Oxford for them. You also may have to sit exams, which again means long travel. This is great for people who are not in a position to spend their income on courses which would have otherwise left them without any opportunity. ...

Advantages: High standard of educated and great location Disadvantages: Expensive around London
I have been studying BusinessManagement at Kings college at the Waterloo campus and have had an excellent experience there.
Located on the Southbank it is located in a vibrant area yet quieter than it is north of the river. There is plenty to do around the area and lots of bars to go to after a hard day of education!
The standard of learning at Kings is great and truly feel as if I have learnt soo much during my time at Kings. The staff are all very knowledgeable and always willing to offer advice and support.
You are assigned a personal tutor who will always help you out if you ever get stuck with work or have personal problems.
I would recommend you try and stay in the Stamford Street apartments if possible as these are located directly across the road from the university!
Overall a very good place to study! ...
Advantages: Great night life, cheap drinks and low rent Disadvantages: Very cold!!
I studied at Newcastle uni for 3 years and loved every minute of it. My flat was great, the night life is unbeatable and the atmosphere is the friendliest of any city i've ever been to. What I have realised since though, is that my course was very useful too! At the time my lectures were just something I did between drinking sessions but since I went out into the big wide world i've discovered that my BusinessManagement course has set me in good stead for my career in PR and Advertising. I have covered so many things on my course which apply to my job and I am in a far better position than the other graduates at my office as i've done all the ground work. It was a good all-round course with wide topic areas and the opportunity to specialise. When I went to uni I didn't know what I wanted to be but this course gave me the skills to ...
Advantages: Well rounded Disadvantages: too many early classes
This is a well rounded course, with a good all round selection of modules in computing and businessmanagement.
For second year the modules are :
Technology of e-commerce
Multimedia Systems
Computer Programming 2
Marketing
Human Resource Managemnt
Financial Statement Analysis
For first year it was
Computer Programming 1
Introduction to Managamnet
Accountancy for non-specialists
Information Technology
Managament Information Systems
Computer Architecture
Most modules feature practical assessments and coursework, but these don't put too much pressure on you and the course in first year is a resonably easy work load. Most of the lectures notes are available to download from the Queens website - www.qub.ac.uk ...
