Jammers and all,

I'm sure my choice of name says it all, though certainly not a 'guru' I'll attempt to explain how next day parcel delivery company's work in this instance. I'm ex TNT, Business Post and currently APC with over 10 years of experience, so i've got a fairly good handle on the industry as a whole.

With the greatest of respect the problem is preception. How far and wide do you think the delivery driver covers to reach your address? You're probably saying 'I really don't care, I just want my parcel when they said it would arrive!'

All carries operate in similar ways and provide like for like service options, what greatly differs are the size of the areas each depot covers. Most drivers arrive in depot between 6-8am Mon-Fri to sort and load their freight. Saturday's differ, but I won't go into the reasons why now).... If you take your own post code of where you live, work out the 4 furthest points away from you and think about how you'd get to each of them in the quickest possible time..... This is what a driver has to consider, only on a much larger scale when planning his run, AND then there's the premium jobs he has to make - the pre 9am consignments, 10am delveries and before noon's too - all in diferent areas no doubt, along with the standard next day drops (On average drivers take out between 60-100 individual consignments a day, about 80-120 parcels) There's road works/closures, traffic jams, bad weather to factor in.... and the collections he needs to make before arriving back between 5 and half 6. It's a tough day, believe me and not one i'd relish.

'Carded' applies two-fold. Nobody was in to accept and sign for the goods, he can't just leave it unless instructed - self explanitory, or the driver ran out of time. It's a standard industry 'excuse'. What won't happen though is that priority is given the next day, because of what I've mentioned above, BUT an attempt to deliver must be made....according to the procedures all carriers operate - it really depends where the address concerned slots into the round.

Hope this helps for future reference.

*****Update*****

Business Post Fedex are a part franchised, part owned company. Originally founded in the late 60's on the back of Yellow taxi cabs in the Harrow area of London by two brothers - Peter and Michael Cain (appear in the who's who of richest Briton's) they now boast a top FTSE 250 listing. Working in UK partnership with Federal Express for global access, and holding one of only 4 UK mailing licenses, the company has recovered from losing me and is going from strength to strength!

Their niche is the delivery of time sensitive document and small parcel consignments to business addresses nationwide. As with all carriers a weakness exists where home deliveries are concerned, though they are addressing this with a the development of a new division called...Home delivery...how original!

Look out for Business Post to be one of the growth suppliers over the coming years as the old guard begin to fall away, or become swallowed up within buyouts and amalgamations.
