Just one of the many things I have realised in all my years of dog ownership is that smell plays an important part at meal time. That is to say that in my opinion, the smellier the dog food, the more my dogs are sure to love it. Step forward Butchers Tripe, made by Butchers Pet care, one of the most pungent tins of dog food available on the canine food shelves of shops and Supermarkets.
This whiffy concoction is available in 400, 800 and 1200 gram tins which are adorned with a blue Frisbee in flight being leapt at by a scruffy looking dog. The rest of the can is decorated with a blue sky background and a yellow band around the top stating which particular flavour you have chosen. The flavours available are plentiful and include tripe with chicken, tripe mix, tripe and vegetables and tripe with lamb. The top of the tin exclaims that there are no artificial colourings, preservatives,
flavourings or Soya which is a refreshing change in tinned dog foods. One slight gripe is that the top is not one of those natty ring pull types that you just yank and lift, so it’s out with the good old tin opener to release the smelly food.
And smell it most certainly does, as soon as the tin opener bites into the metal the smell escapes and envelopes your nostrils. It smells vaguely of horse manure mixed with an underlying meat gone off smell, not at all pleasant as far as I’m concerned but my three black Labradors are starting to salivate and pace restlessly, trying to tell me to quicken my actions. In a previous Op for Bonio`s I actually ate one in order to get a feel and taste for the product and thus write a better Op, but I simply could not bring myself to put a spoonful of Butchers tripe to my mouth. I fear I would retch if the cold, reeking meat sat on my tongue and assaulted my taste buds. So absolutely no taste test today, I’ll leave it to my dogs and try and interpret their reactions as best I can.
Lifting the lid of the can reveals a solid lump of meat similar in look and consistency to a coarse pate, and pale brown in colour. The meat is enveloped by a thin layer of clearish jelly where the liquids dispelled during cooking have solidified. I spoon the meat out into three bowls where it needs further chopping up to turn it into manageable lumps, (Labradors do not like to waste time chewing food when they can simply swallow it whole). The look of the product is fairly uniform with just the occasional different looking piece of meat, and I tend to mix it with a small amount of mixer meal which makes my Labradors have to chew and thus strengthen their teeth. As with all dog food, wet or dry, plenty of drinking water should be available which it always is in my house.
Butchers tripe is made up of Meat and Animal derivatives, of which 26% is tripe, as well as minerals and derivatives of vegetable origin. So next time your down on the farm or out in the countryside and you see a cow or sheep without its derivatives, you’ll know where they went. There are also plenty of nutrients and vitamins present, including Vitamins A, D3 and E, which are all guaranteed up to the best before date, which is August 2005. Protein, Oil and fibre are also present in varying quantities.
Once I put the bowls of Butchers tripe down for my excited doggy brood to devoir they set about the task with relish. This is one of the few dog foods that they all eat straight away without being distracted; indeed they spend countless minutes afterwards checking each others bowls to ensure every scrap has been taken care of. And if I can just lower the tone for a moment, the day after they have Butchers tripe for dinner, my Labradors stools are firm and glorious, and smell not dissimilar to the Butchers tripe they have eaten the day before.
I have been feeding Butcher tripe to my dogs for several years now, and have only had a couple of problems with it. On both occasions I found a stone amongst the meat which I removed and contacted Butchers Pet Care about. They sent me a swift reply stating that the stone was probably present because the tripe’s had not been thoroughly cleaned. An apology and some vouchers ensured that I would continue to use the product much to the delight of my dogs.
So, a much loved product as far as my three black Labradors are concerned, and they do have excellent taste, after all they love me unconditionally. And that love and adoration goes through the roof when they see me position the clothes peg on my nose as the signal that it’s Butchers tripe for dinner.
