At the same time, comedian Jillian Jackson is watching her career feebly played out against a succession of down-market comedy joints. All her dreams of changing her life are torpedoed when she, too, becomes a victim of the deranged scientist, who steals her car. Then begins a lunatic chase, involving the doctor and his victims, and the surfaces of reality quickly become very insubstantial. As the plot suggests, Koontz's new book is quite unlike anything he has written before (or, for that matter, unlike anything by his contemporaries); the highly ingenious plotting is matched by some beguilingly off-kilter characterisation and a breathtaking pace that allows for little pause. One can only admire this writer's refusal to repeat himself: a phenomenon all too rare with so many other thriller writers simply recycling the same old material. --Barry Forshaw

...kind of invisible protoplasm left by bad people) left in the most innocuous places such as door knobs and stair banisters. This leads to a show down in a darkened bedroom with a psychotic teenage duo just about to commit a heinous family crime. In a land that is Koontz generated, the main action is set against a backdrop of "...modest houses, old but for the most part well maintained: stucco casetas with barrel-tile roofs, suburban ranch-style houses ... ...significant part in the story. By contrast, Dylan’s occupation as an artist together with Jilly being a stand-up comedienne both appear relatively mundane.
For anybody that has read any number of Koontz’s novels, there is a familiar pattern woven here. For a start, the pace and pitch of DK’s story is as pacey as any other. The reader is lured from one chapter to the next with cliff-hanger finales in most sequences whilst the overriding style of ...

It cost £6.99 in W H Smith, though there was also a buy 1 get 1 half price offer at the time.
THE STORY:
The book leaps straight into the action, introducing us to Dylan O'Conner and his autistic brother Shepherd (Shep).
As Dylan is out buying a take away dinner for them both while they stay at a motel, he finds himself being clubbed unconscious.
He wakes ... ...but Shep lives his life by particular sets of rules and can't be rushed. He must wear certain clothes, eat certain food etc.
He finally gets them out and runs into a young woman by the name of jilly, who is desperately searching for her car and cursing someone who sounds suspiciously like Dr Proctor.
He discovers that Jilly is also a victim and has been injected with the strange 'stuff' and that now Proctor seems to have stolen her car to make ...

Shortly afterwards, at the same motel, comedian Jillian Jackson falls prey to the same doctor and is also injected with the strange substance.
Both are warned that the doctor is being pursued and if it is found out that they have been injected, they too will be pursued and killed. The doctor calls this fluid his "life's work" and that each and every person will have a very different reaction ... ...I have always loved about Dean Koontz' writing is his involvement in the characters. You almost feel as if you know these people personally.
Dylan's autistic brother Shep is portrayed beautifully. He is not made out to be Dustin Hoffman from Rainman, nor does he appear to have any mystical gifts - other than the speed at which he can solve a jigsaw. The relationship between the 2 brothers is very loving, yet at times you can feel the frustration ...

Advantages: good characters Disadvantages: predictable story thats not too exciing
...that compared to other books by Dean Koontz, this story was not as gripping or fast paced. The characters were brilliant, and you find yourself routing for them from the very beginning.
The story centres round Dylan, and his autistic brother Shepherd, who get injected by mystery ´stuff´by a mad doctor. The doctor tells them that this ´stuff´has a different effect on different people, and that now they are injected, they will be hunted down and klled.
... ...need to get to grips with, and start to understand.
The characters are brilliant, especially Shep. His austistic traits are interseting to read about. These include spending exactly nine minutes in the shower, only eating square food, and being a human thesauras!
The story is a bit weak afte a while, as its basicly just them on the run. ...
