Probably the best micro hifi you can buy Advantages: Small, good sound, packed with feaures Disadvantages: Don't expect miracles - audiophiles will still want to go with separates This review refers to the CR-515DAB. There are quite a few variations in models, so watch out! This is a feature-packed micro hi-fi that offers the same sound quality as budget separates. I'm no audiophile so that's about as much as I can say, except that the sound is far clearer and more distinct than any hi-fi I've ever heard (I weep when I hear my car stereo nowadays...). You'll need good speakers, though. The CR-515 is packed with features, ... ...playback in particular. I couldn't test DAB because my area doesn't get a signal. One tip: There's a button on the front marked "Direct". It took me a few weeks to spot this (it's a paragraph in the manual). onkyo cr 305x Advantages: good solid feel, lots of inputs. One marvellous Marantz!!! Advantages: Sound Disadvantages: None ...have opted for a used Marantz CD63 MkII KI Signature CD player to keep within my meagre buget of £200. What a difference from my previous model, an ancient, yet well regarded, Denon 1100 model: the sound of the Marantz is magical, most noticeable the width of the soundstage. Details are sharp and bass much more pronounced. I have noticed notes, sounds that I hadn't before. It is very musical in its output and together with my MF A1 amp I can understand ... Arcam 192 CD player Advantages: Natural and involving musical qualities. Disadvantages: The remote is not my favorite. Bought one of these three years ago and loved it ever since. At £900 it wasn't cheap but has given a lot of musical pleasure. Compared to my earlier Alpha 9 CD player which was a high achiever in its day the upsampling 192 appears to offer more low level detail making listening easier somehow. Bass goes deep, mid range seperates and layers superbly and the treble can be breathtakingly beautiful with the right recording. The Sony is almost music to my ears Advantages: Great build quality, clear and spacious, good punch to the bass Disadvantages: Can sound muddled when there is too much going on in the music Sony have always had a very solid reputation for producing solid hi fi i.e.rarely spectacular but certainly tick all the boxes you would ask for in hi fi. Thankfully this does very little to harm this reputation, the build quality is excellent and certainly is built to last, it is very sturdy and does not look cheap in the slightest. However cds are becoming something of a relic due to the fact that digital music stored on the computer does allow ... ...many impressive external dac's now on the market. Having said that though, for those whose primary need is the convenience of immediately playing their favourite music cd's, then this does a very admirable job.
