Ulead Cool3D looked exactly like the kind of software I was looking for. It proclaimed an ability to create text with amazing 3D features and very sophisticated animations. It's the kind of things you see in the movie trailers -- 3D text exploding into a million pieces or hurtling through space towards you. And, in theory, it's great.
But the software itself turned out to be a real disappointment. It's fine if you're making the graphics just for fun (although the range of features was much smaller than I'd expected) but try and display them on a professional website and it turns into a joke. They may look cool on amateur sites, but if you're trying to make something slick and smooth then these graphics are ridiculous. For starters, you have to manually turn them from movie files into animated GIFs, so to begin with you're losing quality and clarity. Colours fade and some of the sharpness is lost. These animated GIF files take a long time to load and because you can only choose from a limited range of colours during the design phase, you have to make your page background match the graphic rather than the other way round. On the web, the animations look fuzzy and jerky. Definitely not what I was hoping for.
Aspects of it are good, but this software needs a lot more work to turn it into a real web design tool.
